The family & friends of Rodman Hughes are uniting to raise money to help with his battle against a rare form of cancer called leimyosarcoma.

If you were to ask anyone who knows Rod, what they immediately think of is his radiant smile. It is evident wherever he goes that he brightens the day of whomever he is around. Rodman Hughes is a gentle, giving, warm, intelligent, wonderful 26 year old man with a bright future ahead of him.

He has worked for the last two and a half years for Indiana Mentors, caring for and tending to severely mentally or physically handicapped people. This type of work takes a lot of patience and understanding and Rod was happy to make their lives better day by day. When recently asked if he wanted to pursue a career as a nurse and get more technically credited, his response was "I feel like I am doing something really good for my guys that I care for. This is what life is all about". At 26, he understands the true meaning of what makes life worth living.

Rod also has a passion and talent for cooking. He was famous in his circle for the delicious meals he could prepare. Rod’s cooking was just another reflection of his bright internal spirit and care for others.

Sadly, Rod was suddenly stricken with severe pain in his abdomen and liver area with violent vomiting two days before Thanksgiving that put him in the emergency room. After a biopsy and consultation, he was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphnoma. However, after sending the biopsy to Mayo Clinic it was confirmed that Rod has a very rare form of soft tissue cancer called Leiomyosarcoma. The rarity of this disease is overwhelming - only 4 out of 1 million have it. The prognosis and statistics are daunting. However, there must always be hope. Holding on to labels and negative diagnosis will block any healing that can happen.

With that being said, the severity of Rod’s circumstance is real and he is in great need of assistance. He is not able to cook or eat much more than a tablespoon of food at a time. He is unable to work at all and does not have insurance. He is presently living with his mother who is unable to work outside of the home in order to care for Rod's needs of chemo and radiation and is on medicaid herself. Rod's mom has spinal fusion, severe scoliosis, and is unable to work in conventional work environment. They both have filed for disability which could takes months or years to be approved. While waiting for food stamps to be OK'd through government paperwork, there are many other basics left to struggle with such everyday food, distilled water, electrical bills, nutritional supplementation, pain medications, phone bills, travel expenses, and gasoline.

Please give what you can to help Rod and his family during the extraordinarily difficult time in their lives. Love and many thanks to all.
