Hello from Rachelle, Joleen and Alicia! We started this fundraiser to help our parents (Joe and Lisa Redford)

It was Sunday August 29, 2010, when we received the phone call, our parents, who were on vacation in Arizona for our dad’s 50th Birthday, were in a horrific motorcycle accident in the Salt River Canyon, Arizona. The trauma center where they were airlifted informed us to get to Arizona as soon as possible. We took the first flight out from Michigan to Arizona. I (Rachelle) remember being on the flight, holding my sisters hands and praying for God to please not take our parents from us.

Our parents were both in ICU upon our arrival in Arizona. The doctors told us that our dad had a traumatic brain injury, a collapsed lung, a shattered right clavicle, and several broken ribs. He was in a medically induced coma and once his condition became stable the surgeon would operate on his clavicle. Our mom sustained a T4 fracture, T5 burst, T6 fracture, several broken ribs, and a broken right hip. Mom’s doctor informed us that the accident had left her paralyzed.

On August 31, 2010 dad underwent surgery to have his clavicle repaired. Shortly after a very successful surgery my dad was on his way to recovery. This would be the first time we were able to talk to him and he could respond. His only concern was our mom. On September 1, 2010 both our parents were in stable condition and moved from ICU to surgical recovery. Although they were only two rooms apart they had not yet seen each other. On Thursday, September 2, 2010, dad was able to make the walk 2 doors down to see mom. It was a very emotional moment. He was discharged shortly after. It would be several weeks before our mom would be discharged.

During the day our dad spent as much time as he physically could next to our mom’s side. Our mom was going to be discharged on September 22, 2010. Her doctor released her to fly home on a commercial flight. Our dad was unable to fly as a result of his punctured lung. His uncles (Lloyd and Rich) and cousin (Kevin) drove a motorhome from Michigan to Texas. One of our dad’s best friends, Jeff, lives in Arizona so he drove our dad to Texas where they met our dad’s uncles and cousin.

Our Grandma, our mom, and myself (Rachelle) flew home on September 22, 2010. Our dad and his Uncle Lloyd met us at the airport in Detroit, Michigan. From the airport they went directly to RIM, at the Detroit Medical Center where our mom would continue her therapy. Our dad was able to stay the entire time with our mom while she was in therapy. This was extremely helpful because the rehabilitation facility is an hour drive from our parent’s house and our dad was unable to drive because of his head injury. In addition we were able to schedule dad for outpatient therapy at the same facility.

On November 17, 2010 mom was discharged home. She continues to attend outpatient therapy, where she works her butt off!!!

Our parents insurance does not cover any modifications to their home or any of the much needed equipment (including a FES RT-300, that stimulates moms muscles preventing spasms, which is $15,000). Their insurance only covers a limited amount of therapy visits per year. These expenses are causing an extreme financial burden on our parents. If we could provide everything needed for our parents we would, but we can’t. That’s why we are asking for your help. Our wish for 2011 is to be able to raise enough money to provide our parents with everything needed for their recovery.

Please help our wish come true.
