About James:

James Murtha, III grew up in the mid-Michigan area where he eventually attended and earned his high school diploma from Nouvel Catholic Central in Saginaw, MI in the spring of 2008.  During his time at Nouvel, he was very active in anything from school plays to church activities to sports.  He played a key role in the football team’s back to back state championships in 2006 and 2007.  After high school, James earned his bachelor’s degree from Adrian College where he played two years of football during his college years.  During college, he took up the guitar.

After graduating from college, James was a certified nurse assistant (CNA) for a year in Ann Arbor, MI before heading out to the Denver, CO area in June of 2014.  During the Summer of 2014, James began working full-time as a licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Denver.  He remained active and enjoyed training and competing in triathlons while deepening his love of music and mastering the guitar.

James has always had a strong zest for life and has a large circle of friends from his different walks of life.  He is now 26 years old and a friend to many and the favorite uncle to his five nieces and three nephews.

October 5, 2014:

On October 5, 2014, James suffered a cervical spinal cord injury while mountain biking in Colorado. James fractured his neck at C3, C4 and C5. Currently, he is unable to move his legs and has very limited movement in his arms. He requires daily assistance as he currently cannot complete the majority of tasks on his own.  Despite the seriousness of his injury, his positive attitude and relentless work ethic have been apparent since the day of his injury.  He completed in-patient rehabilitation at Craig Hospital, located in Colorado.

What’s Next:

While we still do not know the extent of recovery James will experience, we do know that after finishing rehabilitation at Craig Hospital and continued out patient rehabilitation, he continues to require care on a daily basis and additional rehab to continue his journey towards greater recovery and independence.  With spinal cord injuries, the majority of recovery occurs within the first six months post-injury with limited recovery from the six month to 24 month period.  While some of his care has been covered by insurance and governmental assistance, James is not eligible to receive disability benefits from his employer.
