We are asking for financial assistance to help pay the medical bills & expenses incurred as a result of a devastating fire.

This fund request was prompted by a very tragic and devastating accident that occurred in Plumville, Indiana County, Pennsylvania on January 24 of this year. A young Amish family - Mattie Hostettler and her husband, Ervin, along with their 5 children, found themselves living in the basement of Mattie’s parents’ home. Ervin had been laid off from his job at a greenhouse and the house they had been renting, was something they could no longer afford – hence the move to the in-law’s basement. That fateful afternoon, Ervin attempted to relight a dying fire in the woodstove in the family living space. A fire ball erupted and shot out of the stove enveloping Ervin and 4 year old Ervin, Jr. and 5 year old Andy in flames. Within minutes, volunteer firemen had extinguished the fire, but Ervin and his sons had suffered horrific burns and were quickly flown to a Pittsburgh burn center for treatment. Little Ervin died the next day of burns over 95% of his body. 29 year old Ervin, Sr., burned over 65% of his body, succumbed 17 days later. Andy, burned over 25% of his body, is making a wonderful recovery, and after 2 skin graft surgeries is now in a children’s rehabilitation center in Pittsburgh.

At issue are the enormous bills that this family has incurred as a result of this fire. Uninsured, and now with the loss of their wage earning husband and father, this young woman and her 4 surviving children face an uncertain future. The costs of intensive care burn unit hospitalization for 3 family members for as long as 6½ weeks, costs of family members staying at the hospital facility, medical helicopter transport at $42,000 and rehabilitation and surgery costs for little Andy loom as an insurmountable nightmare in the face of their futures.

This fund is aimed at paying these enormous medical bills and providing an opportunity for Mattie and her family to build a brighter and happier future without the dark cloud of this enormous debt shadowing their lives. Because Amish tradition holds that women do not work outside of their homes, the importance of this fund-raiser becomes abundantly clear. We ask that you find it in your hearts to help this family move though this difficult and heart-wrenching event and provide them with the ability to move forward with their lives.
