The friends of Michael and Jermaine are uniting to raise funds to help with Michael's kidney damage and Jermaine's vision loss.

Michael is one of those stubborn you-can’t-keep-me-down people. He is a fighter and a survivor who has always found a way to get back up and keep going no matter how hard the knock. He is a 61-year old burn victim who had half his body and face burnt off and despite not getting plastic surgery because of financial reasons was unstoppable. He got married, raised two children and got involved in social organizations to help at-risk children. He worked as a truck driver for may years despite a heart condition and chronic diabetes. After the doctors said he couldn’t drive trucks anymore, he began networking with small businesses in his neighborhood to provide them with various services. Now, for the first time in his life Michael’s unstoppable determination and creative energy is no match for the sudden storm that hit him. He needs a helping hand.

In May of this year, Michael went to Sinai hospital in Baltimore, Maryland because he did not feel well. A week before his discharge from the hospital he was accidentally administered an overdose of Lasik which immediately damaged both of his kidneys. He now requires dialysis 3 times per week. Michael was recently transferred from the critical care unit at Sinai Hospital to one of their annexed nursing homes. He will be discharged from the nursing home by the end of July but will need to go back to the hospital 3 times per week for dialysis. However, Michael does not have a car at this time.

As if things couldn’t get worse, two days after his kidney damage, Michael’s 27-year old son Jermaine, who was born with diabetes suddenly, began bleeding from his two eyes while driving on the highway. The doctors determined that an excessive amount of pressure had built up behind the retina of his eyes and resulted in a significant irretrievable loss of vision. Doctors continue to intervene to reduce the pressure and save what is left of his vision but they have been so far unsuccessful in reducing the pressure to a safe level.

Because he is suddenly legally blind, Jermaine is currently unable to work and is now unable to pay the monthly rent for the apartment which he shares with his Dad. They currently owe 1,300.00 in rent. The landlord has given Michael and Jermaine one week to come up with at least 2/3 of the money or they will be evicted.

We are looking to raise either the minimum of 800.00 towards Michael’s back rent or the maximum of 5,000.00 to pay all his back rent and help him purchase a car to get to and from the hospital for his 3-times per week dialysis treatment and to transport Jermaine to the hospital for his eye surgeries.

Please be part of extending a helping hand to Michael and his son. The time to act is now! For verification purposes, please contact Michael’s social worker at Mount Sinai Hospital: Colleen Chen-McLaughlin at 410-601-5954.
