This is the Hooray for Layla fund. All funds will go to pay for the medical costs, therapies and related expenses not covered by insurance.

Layla was born a beautiful, healthy baby girl in the summer of 2006. As a five-month-old, she suffered a brain cyst in her right ventricle that grew to the size of a golf ball. It created extreme pressure inside her head (enough to damage her optic nerves and injure her pituitary gland) before it was surgically corrected. As a result she has optic nerve hypoplasia & panhypopituitarism. This means Layla’s visually impaired and requires
complete hormone replacement because her pituitary gland doesn’t work.
(Her visual acuity is estimated to be about 20/600.) Layla has no central vision, and functions solely with peripheral vision. When she sleeps, it’s also been discovered that she experiences pre-seizure brain activity that, unmedicated, could result in seizures.
Being deprived of essential hormones has effected her growth, both physically and developmentally. Her visual impairment is also a contributing factor. Her body structure has suffered the following side effects:
subluxated hips, severe flat feet (that required surgery 12/27/11), and scoliosis. Her fine motor skills are less than that of an average two year-old’s. Layla’s gross motor skills are currently such that she cannot
walk unassisted, and she’s receiving therapies to strengthen and balance out the muscle tone in her body.
In short, Layla has been diagnosed with panhypopituitarism (which is an umbrella term for hypothyroidism, diabetes insipidus, growth hormone
deficiency, and cortisol dependency), optic nerve hypoplasia, pre-seizure brain activity, subluxated hips, severe flat feet, scoliosis, low muscle tone, and has been placed on the autism spectrum with a diagnosis of
PDD-NOS due to her sensory disorder. Due to the hormone replacement therapy she’s on, Layla is immuno-compromised.

We are currently paying out of pocket for the following therapies: Hippotherapy $2,000 a year; Physical therapy $75 a session (2 sessions a week); Occupational therapy $75 a session (2 sessions a week); Mobility therapy $75 a session (2 sessions a week). These are all therapies Layla desperately needs to grow and develop and we need your help to make it happen.

Thank you,

The Rondon Family
