We are joining together to raise money for a family that has been devastated by cancer and a house fire that took everything except HOPE.

All their lives, this loving couple worked to support their family of seven. They worked hard to provide a loving home and instilled positive family values and a strong work ethic in their five children. Working well into their seventies, serving their community and active in church, they were devastated to learn Mrs. Gray had breast cancer. Not long after, Mr. Gray was diagnosed with cancer and other serious health problems. Suddenly, a couple who had spent their lives caring for others and working was unable to care for themselves.

Rising medical costs added to their financial hardship but their family stepped in to help. Mrs. Gray has been bedridden and required assistance round the clock. Their daughter and two of their grandsons moved into their home to help. On Friday, October 26th, a fire took their home. Fortunately, they are all safe and no one was injured but they lost everything they owned and with no insurance, they are starting over completely. It is heartbreaking to know how much this family has done to help others, how hard they have worked to remain self sufficient, how dedicated they are to their large family and even though they seem to have one devastating tragedy after another, they remain positive and hopeful.

It is easy for all of us to feel down about the economy, maybe how we can't eat out five days a week instead of three, or that we have had to cut back on vacations and things we enjoy but I cannot imagine losing everything in one day and know that depending on the generosity of theirs, strangers was my only means of survival. Yet, that is what this family is facing.

It is our goal, our prayer to come together as a community to help this deserving family by raising money so they can rebuild their family home, replace necessary items and return to them their peace of mind so they can enjoy what should be the relaxing years of their lives.

Remarkably, I posted a quick prayer request on my FaceBook status and already, we have been blessed with people wanting to help. We are setting up a fund at a bank that will be used for cash donations. We have a friend at Mellon Bridge Storage that is donating a unit to store furniture and other items until they find temporary housing. My daughter has enlisted the help of her sorority sisters who are organizing fund raisers and so many are opening their hearts and checkbooks to help. I will continue to post information on how you can help and what is needed.

Thank you and God bless you!
