I am recovering from a double mastectomy due to breast cancer in both breasts. As a single mother of 3, my children and I need your help!

Asking for help is something I find very difficult, but the events of the past six months have led to a very trying time for me and my children.

For the first 44 years of my life, I was known for being self-reliant, independent, energetic, hard-working, caring, and generous. This year, I am forced to add “needy” to that list.

I am recently divorced and struggling to raise my children on a very modest income of $18,000 per year. I have 3 children, one girl and two boys. My 10-year-old son, Jake, is what people call “high-functioning” autistic. Although he is brilliant and absolutely delightful, it takes every ounce of energy I have to care for him. My 12-year-old winds up helping much more than he would like, but he always takes it in stride and does his best!

Over the last six months, our family has had to learn to be stronger than ever before. I am in the process of ending my 12 year marriage with a mentally and emotionally abusive man. It’s been a very long and difficult road to travel. I do my best to maintain normalcy for the children.

In November, I went in for a routine mammogram, and was diagnosed with very early stage breast cancer. With my extreme family history and the cancerous cells discovered throughout both breasts, the decision was simple. On March 14th, I was admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital for a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. This has put me and my boys under an extreme amount of financial and emotional hardship. I was forced to take time off of both jobs – without any income during this time off. Adding to the hardship, I have NO family on the east coast.

As if this wasn’t enough, on February 16th, I was driving to work and a woman tried to drive across the road in front of me, without looking my way. I hit her at 50 mph, bounced off, hit the side of the hill, and landed upside down. My van was totaled. My knees were busted up when they hit the dash board at that speed. I also have a concussion, accompanied by blurry vision, and a spinal/disk injury causing extreme pain in my neck and shoulders. All in all, I was very, very lucky to live through the accident, and to discover and beat the cancer! Nonetheless, the accident has added to the stress, both financially and emotionally for all of us.

So, “needy” is now a word used to describe myself and my boys, as well as humbled, appreciative, and very grateful. We are already so grateful for all the friends who have already offered to help in so many ways. Unfortunately, we are still in need of the basic necessities while I recover from my operation – things like food and money to pay medical bills, utility bills, mortgage, etc.

I assure you, any funds donated would be used strictly to pay for medical bills and basic necessities that directly affect the well-being of my children.

Any help at all, including your prayers and well wishes, is greatly appreciated. I am already so overwhelmed by the outpouring of kindness we’ve received from those around us! Thank you for your time and concern. May you be as fortunate as we have been to be surrounded by such kind and giving people.
