"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD- Jeremiah 29:11

Hola Friends & Family!

Just recently, I was presented with an incredible opportunity to chaperone a Global Outreach project in Duran, Ecuador! I could not be more excited and grateful for such an experience, and I look forward to the next 5 short weeks of preparation, planning, and learning with my new team!

Global Outreach (GO!) is an organization at Fordham that gives students the opportunity to better understand social, economic, political, and environmental injustices by sending student volunteers to live, work, and learn in oftentimes poor and marginalized communities both inside the US and around the globe. GO! provides the opportunity for students to connect and learn from individuals, giving students a greater understanding of the issues plaguing our global society. GO! runs twenty-eight projects a year, and within each trip, the team works together to fundraise the cost of the trip.

From March 11-18 my team and I will be working and learning in Duran Ecuador. Our project focuses on cultural immersion and the idea of "being, rather than doing". This means that we will be learning from the community we'll live in.The organization we are working with, Rostro de Cristo, brings volunteer groups from the U.S. to stay with them throughout the year. These volunteers will bring us to neighborhood visits, schools, and hospitals. We'll go to the market and cook and clean with the community.
Rostro de Cristo focuses on living in solidarity with the poor. Instead of acting for the poor, it is important to act with them. Our group will engage with the community to learn their stories. We’ll participate in reflection and dialogue with our team, the community, and the yearlong volunteer from Rostro de Cristo accompanying our team. After we come back from Ecuador, we’ll have team meetings to process and discuss our experience. We’ll hold an educational event to share our experiences with the rest of the Fordham community as well.

As many of you know, I have a passion for cultures, language, and learning from others. I was fortunate to spend 6 months in Spain and take part in a Global Outreach project to Guatemala last spring. Both of these experiences have had such a huge impact on my perspective, my passions, and my future goals. As I continue to study to become a teacher and work with culturally and linguistically diverse students, I want nothing more but to learn from what this great big world has to offer. Working with students with such rich and diverse backgrounds inspires me to learn as much as I can from the people around me. This opportunity has presented itself at such a perfect time in my life and I truly believe it is a journey I am meant to take. To simply talk with and learn from this community in Ecuador is an experience I will cherish in so many ways.

I am aware that money is tight for many of us, and it wasn't long ago that I received a tremendous outpour of love and support from so many friends and family members as I prepared for my project in Guatemala last year. For that reason, I am not asking for much. The littlest bit will help as I prepare for this next journey in my life! Don't be afraid to send even 5$! I am beyond grateful for the incredible love and encouragement that surrounds me.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page and for reading about my project! Every little bit helps!

Peace & Love Always,

Gina Signorile
