Please support Greenhouse Scholars’ mentorship program to provide individualized guidance, support, and inspiration to our Scholars!

Greenhouse Scholars provides comprehensive personal and financial support to high-performing, under-resourced college students who come from communities throughout Colorado. This comprehensive Whole Person approach includes providing extensive mentoring, academic and pre-professional advising to ensure successful college careers and beyond for our scholars.

78% of our scholars are first-generation college students, with an average family income of just $28,705 which is little over a third of the national average. Tuition scholarships like the ones provided by Greenhouse Scholars lay the foundation to change these scholars’ lives, but we know more is needed. Of those who begin college only 11% of low-income, first generation students will earn a college diploma within six years. One reason is that low-income students do not have the network of peers and role models to encourage their college success.

Greenhouse Scholars mentors provide students with the knowledge and shared experience our first-generation students may not receive from their families and communities. The mentorship program connects Scholars with community leaders who help to guide, encourage, and inspire students to achieve more than they could on their own. Each mentor relationship is customized to meet the individual Scholars’ needs.

Please enable us to provide mentors for 8 of our scholars. It costs Greenhouse Scholars $275 to provide a trained mentor to each Scholar. All our mentors are volunteers, but our costs include recruiting, vetting, providing support and training to our mentors and managing our volunteer network. For example, our vetting process includes a fixed cost of a background check on every potential mentor.

“Meeting with my mentor has been a great experience. It has been wonderful getting to know her and having someone to talk to who has been, not only through college, but who has gone to Stanford and is familiar with the types of situations and obstacles I might encounter.”
-Greenhouse Scholar, Class of 2012

"After my fall semester ended, I met with my mentor and told her my frustrations about the fall semester. She was really understanding and really helped pull my energy back up for the spring semester! At that time I really did appreciate her because what I couldn't tell to my parents and peers, I was able to share with her!"
-Greenhouse Scholar, Class of 2011

40% of our Scholars talk to their mentors about topics they don't discuss with anyone else in their life.

We have proven that comprehensive support is the best way of cultivating the next generation of community leaders. While the average GPA of first-generation college students is a 2.6 (with a 2.8 for all students), Greenhouse Scholars average a 3.4 GPA.
