We are committed to ending suffering from hunger in Midtown Manhattan.

In recent years, homelessness in New York City has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

In October 2011, there were an all-time record 41,200 homeless people, including 10,000 homeless families with 17,000 homeless children, sleeping each night in the New York City municipal shelter system. Families comprise 75 percent of the homeless shelter population. Each night additionally thousands of unsheltered homeless people sleep on New York City streets, in the subway system, and in other public spaces.

Research shows that the primary cause of homelessness, particularly among families, is lack of affordable housing. The U.S. Bureau of the Census has recorded a steady decline in the number of affordable rental apartments in New York City, at the same time that wages for low-income New Yorkers have stagnated or fallen -- thus creating a widening affordability gap.

As in other American cities, New York City's unsheltered homeless population is concentrated in the central business district -- that is, midtown Manhattan.

Homelessness in New York City, especially midtown Manhattan, is a large problem, one that has been here for as long as we can all remember, and one that certainly isn't going away anytime soon. With the economic instability our country is enduring right now things seem to be worse than ever for individuals and families who are out of work. Women and children are starving in OUR city right under OUR noses. But, that doesn't have to be the case. We can do SOMETHING, something concrete to help our fellow New Yorkers and human beings.

Kicking Hunger's Ass in NYC is a project meant to live up to its name. Once a month New Yorkers who are dedicated to ending suffering related to hunger in midtown Manhattan will assemble to distribute bagged meals to the homeless population. We will meet at 3pm on the steps of post office in between 33 and 31st on 8th Avenue on select Sundays and Sundays (please see below for dates). Meals will be provided by project staff.

In order to get this project started funds are needed to purchase mass quantities of nutritious and portable food. We are dedicated to providing New York's homeless the nutrition to get through another day. Please help make this a reality for the most vulnerable of our city's population.

Thanks!
