The family and friends of Geraldine Marie Roper are uniting to raise money to help with her battle with Glioblastomas, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Geraldine was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and was immediately treated with surgery and chemotherapy for several months. She eventually went into remission from the breast cancer and continued to live a productive life although she continued to suffer with other health issues. However, on May 21, 2012, the family received devastating news that Geraldine had developed inoperable brain cancer. It was first believed that her breast cancer had returned and metastasized to her brain, but the family learned later that this was not the case.

The family was told that nothing could be done to save her life and she was immediately placed in hospice care. Feeling helpless and defeated, the family began caring for their mother. They begin to mentally prepare for the worse while praying for a miracle. Geraldine spent three weeks in hospice care while her family watched her quickly decline.

While traveling back from temporary duty with the Army, Geraldine’s youngest son came across an advertisement in a Delta Airlines magazine which offered hope in possibly treating his mother’s cancer. The advertisement detailed a procedure known as Fractionated Stereotactic Radiosurgery which had proved to be successful in the treatment of most types of cancer whether that cancer was primary or metastatic, newly diagnosed or recurrent, large or small. Geraldine’s son called the doctor, Dr. Gil Lederman to explain his mother’s situation and inquire about the procedure advertised in the magazine. After a short discussion with the doctor and family members, it was decided that the family would fly their mother to New York City to the Radiosurgery Center to begin treatment. In the beginning, it was determined that she would need two weeks of radiation treatment, but after further tests were conducted, the doctor recommended six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatment because of the seriousness of the disease.

Geraldine is a single, retired nurse living off a small pension and Social Security Disability. Although the majority of the treatment is being covered through Medicare, the family must still provide lodging, food, and transportation for their mother for the duration of her treatment. Because the treatment facility is located in Manhattan, living expenses for Geraldine and those family members caring for her are extremely expensive. The financial stress coupled with the mental stress of caring for Geraldine has begun to take a toll on her family. The family is hopeful that the radiation and chemotherapy treatment that Geraldine is currently undergoing will save her life, but she has a long way to go. The family would like to thank everyone in advance for any donation large or small in support of their loved one.
