I pray that this will reach some guardian angels who can help me and my family with medical and living expenses.

My name is Michael Persichetti and my wife Melanie and I have reached the end of our rope. She is a type 1 diabetic who was misdiagnosed for 20 years as type II because she was not diagnosed until she was 18 years old and was over weight. She has always struggled with her health and in the last 6 months, Melanie's health has taken a turn for the worse.

Here is her story:

I have seen some of the best doctors up and down the Easter Seaboard from Emory University in Atlanta to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore MD! Like my husband said, I was diagnosed as a Type II diabetic at the age of 18 and was put on oral medications. Over the years I developed recurring kidney infections and was diagnosed as having rheumatoid arthritis. I took an experimental medication for RA and went into remission. Since that time, my body has gone through an awful lot of testing and abuse.

Being diabetic, I was seeing an endocrinologist and nephrologist who were monitoring my blood sugars and kidney function. In 2005, my physicians spoke to me about having Gastric Bypass. At that time, my Hemoglobin A1C was 12, which is off the charts. I had begun taking insulin shots and had developed insulin resistance. There were days when my sugars would spike to over 550 and bottom out at 40. I was taking 600 units of insulin a day. I had more frequent pylonephritis infections and my doctors said that I should have Gastric Bypass in hopes to reverse my Type II diabetes.

I had the Gastric Bypass December 20, 2005. It was the hardest thing my body has ever been through but I would do it all over again. Because I had developed Insulin resistance, I was gaining weight even when I did not eat. My body was hanging on to every thing it could because it was fighting aganst its self. At 4 months post op I had lost 60 pounds and was cutting back on my insulin every week. It appeared to be curing the diabetes, just like the doctors promised! In the years that have followed the Gastric Bypass, I had been taken off all diabetes meds, but continued to have spikes and lows in my blood sugar. I was have more frequent kidney infections. I had a kidney biopsy at John's Hopkins that revealed that I was developing glymeriali nephritis, a condition where the filtration system in the kidneys was not functioning at 100%. I also had 2 miscarriages post bypass and had a dnc as well as an ovarian cystectomy and the removal of my left fallopian tube.

My husband and I have listened to one doctor after another tell me that they cannot pinpoint what exactly is wrong with me. I have had surgeries, biopsies, physical therapy, as well as chiropractic therapy. We have spent thousands and thousands of dollars for the medical profession to tell us that they dont know what to do next.

I was hospitalized in 2009 for heart arrhythmias and was subjected to a series of cardiac testing. When in reality I was in ketoacidosis, a near fatal condition for type I diabetics. I was given several bags off fluid as standard procedure in the hospital but no one bothered to think that my symptoms could be a diabetic reaction. Merely that I was stressed and having chest pain and anxiety that made me pass out! These are medical institutions that are supposed to make people well, not get to the root of the problem!

Because of the economy, we moved back home to Atlanta and boy am I glad we did. Mike has been great about my illness over the years, but what came next was something that no one ever wants to happen but grateful that you are near family and friends if it does! I developed an infection in my foot in August 2011. I was admitted to the hospital for 5 days on iv antibiotics. Within 3 days of being discharged from the hospital, I had my first surgery on my foot because the infection was spreading. I was home for another week and the infection spread into the bone (osetomylitis). I had a PICC line inserted the end of September and began 8 weeks of iv medications and had surgery to core out the bone and place antibiotic beads into the bone.

I was also having some abdominal pain and my dr scheduled a CT Scan and I was told that I one of two conditions, mesenteric adenopathy or lymphoma. I started seeing an Oncologist and in the mean time, the infection flared again with my foot and I presented with unmanagable hives. The oncologist and the infectious disease dr were concerned that I have leukemia.

I had another PICC line inserted, 4 more weeks of iv therapy, 4 weeks of iron transfusions because I am incredibly anemic. The oncologist repeated the study for the lymph nodes in my abdomen and they are still inflamed and in addition, my spleen is inflamed as well as a complex mass on my right ovary.

I had a bone marrow biopsy last week and I am awaiting the results of the study. I am constantly running a low grade fever and I am only cleared to work 6 hours a day. Before I got sick, I was working 55 - 58 hours a week. My employer, while patient with my doctors appts and limited time to work has begun looking for some additional help at work. I cant help but think that he is planning on replacing me.

In the midst of the madness these last few months, my husband lost his job. We had a little bit of money saved but went through that very quickly. My employer has taken away my salary and I am working hourly. This has been a significant loss in income. My husband just began another job, thank goodness, but he has not yet gotten paid. We have taken a title loan on our paid for vehicle and we are so upside down in that and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

Our landlords are such loving and wonderful people but the little bit of money I am bringing home is going to purchase medications and gas for our cars to get back and forth to work.

I have pretty much had a nervous breakdown because we cannot pay all of our bills. Not being able to go to my drs appts and not being able to get my medications is very stressful, which the doctor has told me time and time again that stress will only prolong my ilnless and I am ready to be back on both feet!

We are looking for assistance in paying my medical expenses, our back rent and car payments. Any help you could help with would be greatly appreciated.
