The children here need many of the resources that kids in the US take for granted. Materials such as notebooks, pencils, and art supplies are needed for each student. Abriendo Mentes seeks to provide these learning materials.

The Abriendo Mentes Playa Potrero Project offers afternoon programs for children, divided according to grade level and age. For these lessons, we emulate the public school English curriculum and complement the lessons with additional enriching activities which are essential to stimulate developing minds. We work to provide a motivating afternoon environment for the children to enjoy and engage in activities which are fun, safe and educational.

We also offer an evening adult ESL program that focuses on increasing job competitiveness in the labor market. English language instruction is tailored to specific groups of students to emphasize particular skills and vocabulary that is needed to increase employee effectiveness in a specific occupation. These lessons enable the adult students to hone their knowledge of the English language, which opens up job opportunities and increased freedom of occupation choice.

The initial model of Abriendo Mentes is based in the small, rural community of Playa Potrero located on the north Pacific coast in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica. Rich in culture and steeped in traditional farming values, Playa Potrero is an idyllic, charming village, whose residents typify the "Pura Vida" lifestyle of this peaceful democratic nation.

Despite the beauty and culture of this small village, the community members are lacking many of the fundamental educational resources needed to maintain economic stability into the future. The children of Potrero have limited class time (3 - 4 hours of school a day at best), idle afternoons and reduced access to continuing education.

Together, with the help and support of the local community of Playa Potrero, we were able to successfully launch the Abriendo Mentes project on June 8th, 2009. We currently offer 20 hours of educational classes per week; spanning the areas of English, creative arts, critical thinking and sports, to over 100 community members and counting.

It only takes a small amount to go a long way for those who start with very little.

Abriendo Mentes has set out a few current goals and needs that we will focus on for the 2010 year.

* Every child that is a part of the Abriendo Mentes project will be given a materials packet to use in classes. This packet will include notebooks, folders, pencils, pens, markers, erasers and more.

* Our current teaching space, the Salon Comunal, will receive much needed repairs and painting to create a better learning atmosphere and a more enjoyable comunal space for all the community to use.

* Our classes will incorporate monthly field trips to locations in Guanacaste in order to emphasize lessons on the environment, culture, and social responsibility.

* We will work to create a computer lab with enough resources to teach basic computing classes to the entire community.
