GO Navajo is a part of Fordham University\'s Global Outreach program. It is a three week long journey to a Navajo reservation in Northern Utah, where I will be participating in cultural activities and completing simple construction projects.

With GO Navajo, my team and I will be driving across the country to the reservation located in Northern Utah. Once there, we will be completing simple construction projects like painting, and partaking in cultural activities. My team leader completed this project a few years ago, and she was able to participate in a powwow, a Bear dance, and a sweat lodge, which are all traditional Navajo practices. I specifically applied for the GO! Navajo program because of my interest in American Indian cultures and I am so excited to be able to experience life on a reservation. Last year I studied Native American Philosophy, which peaked my interest in indigenous life. The more I learned about their traditions, the more interested I became in Native American practices and values. I feel a real sense of responsibility to both learn more about our nation’s first people and to alleviate some of the hardships that they must overcome because of the American government. Because I am graduating, I struggled with my decision to apply for a three-week long trip immediately following my entry into “the real world.” After a lot of reflection, I decided that this is my last chance to do something like this and probably my only opportunity to experience traditional Navajo practices. It is a trip that is incredibly personal and very important to me.
