The family and friends of Tisa Carusa are uniting to raise money to help her purchase a wheelchair and pool lift. Please show your support!

There are so many wonderful ways to describe Tisa that I guess I will just mention the few that come to my mind and that warm my heart. Tisa is a teacher; a writer; a poet; a daughter; a sister; an aunt (this is when I see her face light up the most!); a devoted child of God; a friend ( I am so blessed:)); a positive, loving, compassionate and passionate soul!

Tisa, also, happens to have an extremely rare disease of the connective tissue, known as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva....I hope I spelled that correctly;) In chiropractic school, I had an extensive education that included anatomy of the body, pathology, neuromusculoskeletal disorders, etc. often with an emphasis on rare anomalies, but never do I remember studying or encountering any information regarding FOP. In fact, FOP is so rare that it is listed as the top 10 most rare medical diseases. There are only 400 known cases in the entire WORLD!

FOP is mutation in the ACVR1 gene. In FOP, muscle tissue and connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments are gradually replaced with bone. Any trauma to the muscles such as a fall, surgery, flu, etc. may trigger swelling and inflammation followed by bone growth.

Everytime Tisa injures herself, becomes sick, or even sleeps in the wrong position her muscles can become inflamed and 'turn to bone'. About a year ago, Tisa broke her ankle which severely limited her mobility and fixated her ankles in such a position that when standing in her wheelchair(Tisa can no longer sit due to lack of mobility in her back) she must stand on her toes. She also has no mobility in her neck or elbows. There is no known cure and once the bone has formed, there is no reversal.

Yet, do not feel sorry for Tisa. Tisa is a glass half full kind of lady! She is one of the most inspirational, positive, beautiful women that I know! One visit with Tisa and you'll know what I mean:)

I am starting a fundraiser inorder to purchase another wheelchair for her as well as a pool lift to allow her the pleasure of enjoying her family's pool. Last year her wheelchair broke and (because it is not an ordinary wheelchair) it was 'in the shop' for 5 months leaving Tisa confined to her bed for 150 days last year. It is beyond imaginable! Tisa needs a 'backup' wheel chair so that she can enjoy getting fresh air and get out of the house daily. I am going to be setting up an account for all those that would like to amount is too small and everything would be very appreciated!!

Thank you for taking the time to read and getting to know a little bit about my friend:) Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!
