Alvin Merculief, a lifelong native Alaskan, from the lands of the deadliest catch and his fight against pancreatic cancer.

Alvin Merculief, known to most family and friends as Bucko and to me as dad, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer, as with all cancers, is life threatening. Pancreatic cancer is even more so, as it is a form of cancer that is not checked for in yearly medical exams. A person usually does not know of the pancreatic cancer's existence until it's very advanced.

Bucko's pancreatic cancer is inoperable, which means it cannot be surgically removed. His next course of action is six to eight weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The hope is that his tumor can be reduced enough to be surgically removed. Then followed by another round of chemotherapy to ensure the cancer is gone. Through the Lords help, my father and our family are hopeful this can be accomplished so he can once again live a happy cancer free life.

Bucko currently resides in Anchorage, Alaska. Before this he lived in a small rural community in the middle of the Bering Sea known as St. George Island, Alaska. Bucko was a champion for the island. He was the public works director as well as the Mayor of the island for years. Through hard work and determination he was able to bring many of the communities goals to fruition and helped create many jobs for his fellow community members.

Bucko has always given freely to anyone and everyone who needed help without asking for anything in return. Anyone who has met Bucko will say he is a great man who works hard and gives his all to everything. His strong work ethic and loyalty have always been an inspiration to those around him. It is through this hard work and perseverance that Bucko was able to keep an economically struggling community alive for years until he was forced to leave the island he loved to pursue other opportunities.

My father's pancreatic cancer has taken quite the toll on him physically. He is in a great deal of pain and because of this, he is unable to work. My father's inability to work is hard on him, as he loves his job and the work he does. This has taken a toll on him mentally and emotionally. He is also the sole provider for Anna, his wife and my mother.

The funds we are trying to raise will go towards Bucko's medical and living expenses. The medical expenses are beginning to appear and my family has no ability to pay these bills. Any donation, not matter how big or small will be greatly appreciated. If you cannot give financially, please share my father's story with others you know so we may spread the word. Thank you for your time and generosity.
