Chris Gardner Recovery Fund

The family and friends of Chris Gardner are uniting to raise money for his medical cost and related expenses not covered by insurance. We would also like to alleviate the daily living expenses and financial burden that has been put on Chris and his wife due to his medical hardships. These financial hardships were brought on by Chris having Severe Acute Pancreatitis and a rare deadly complication called Nonocclusive Mesenteric Ischemia.

While Acute Pancreatitis is commonly caused by alcohol, Chris’s condition is rare. Many medications, Gallstones and conditions such as Hyperlipidemia (high levels of fat in the blood), and Hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood) may also cause pancreatitis.

In about 15-20% of patients with acute pancreatitis, severe damage to the pancreas may lead to a life threatening illness that is often associated with prolong hospitalization, multiple surgical procedures, and death in some patients. Severe acute pancreatitis usually develops when parts of the pancreas become necrotic (dead) from the acute inflammation.

Severe Acute Pancreatitis is a serious and life threatening disease and require intensive and aggressive management of multiple organ failure and severe infective complications that develop in these patients. Many of the complications seen in severe acute pancreatitis are associated with the presence of the dead pancreatic tissue in the abdomen.

The Nonocclusive Mesenteric Ischemia affects only 7% of patients and kills over 70%. This happens out of nowhere after 5 days. He had to get an Angiogram because his blood vessels were constricted, preventing blood flow to major organs. They had to go through a major artery and place a stent in it so they could allow medicine to drip into the artery and force it to stay open to allow blood flow.

Chris went from being an active, energetic, healthy, hardworking 32 year old, to hanging onto his life in a matter of hours. He was hospitalized for more than two weeks not knowing if he was going to pull through this or not. He has been in and out of the hospital since his initial release from the hospital.

Doctors had to prepare his wife of only two years for the worse as Chris's outcome was not looking so good. But his wife Sam, his close friends, family and Chris himself were not willing to give up. He fought hard every day. Thank God, the doctors found the problems that kept arising before they could cause permanent damage, but this is something that Chris will struggle with for the rest of his life.

While he and his wife will be eternally grateful to the doctors and nurse staff for saving his life it has unfortunately left them with a $300,000 debt. They didn't have insurance because they both had lost their jobs due to the poor economy and trying to catch up on past mortgage payments etc. and come up with money to pay this outrageous medical bill is just taking its toll on them.

We are trying to raise this money so that we can help them as much as possible so that they can try to live a somewhat normal life and not have a constant reminder that Chris was so close to losing his life. I know that with your help, we can all make a huge difference in their lives by paying it forward. I also know that Chris and Sam will be eternally grateful to each and every one of you for helping them in this time of need.

Thank you so much in advance for all your help!!!
