Help IRFF and its volunteers to renovate the kitchen and shelter facilities of Light for the Nations, a nonprofit organization that provides meals to neglected children and cares for the elderly in the impoverished community of Tejarcillos Costa Rica

IRFF’s Discover True Friendship Service Tour is a service learning program that brings high school and college students to a developing country to work on a service project, learn about issues related to developing nations, and experience the local culture and customs. These young men and women work side-by-side with volunteers from the local community on a project that directly and concretely impacts the children of the area.

The 2010 Service Tour will be held in Tejarcillos, an impoverished community outside of San Jose, Costa Rica. We are working with the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation to bring volunteers to Tejarcillos in order to renovate the kitchen and shelter facilities of the Light for the Nations Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides meals and counseling to abused and neglected children and cares for elderly members of the community. The organization cooks meals for sixty children a day, many of whom are orphans and all of whom live in homes where the basics of food, shelter and protection are not guaranteed and where education is a luxury they often cannot afford. They also care for a small community of elderly people and couples who have no family members nearby to look out for them and provide for their needs.

As a very small organization, Light for the Nations’ facilities are limited and in significant disrepair. The kitchen where their meals are cooked is cramped and quite literally falling apart, with holes in the floor and cracks in the walls. The small apartments that the elderly live in are similarly in need of renovation. Walls, floors, kitchens and bathrooms need repair, replacement and some tough cleaning. By improve these facilities, we will allow this small organization that is working so hard to help their community to increase their effectiveness in providing vital meals to children who often rely on them for their daily nutrition and will improve the standard of living for the elderly who rely on the organization for their care.

Your donation will be used to purchase supplies for the repair of Light for the Nations’ kitchen (lumber to replace the broken floors, sheetrock for the cracked walls, sheet metal to keep the rain away from the outside area where the children eat and paint to beautify the walls) and the living facilities for the elderly (cement to create new and repair damaged sidewalks and for a small ramp from the street to the walkway, sheetrock to fix walls, tile for kitchen floors and gutters to keep the rain away from the doorways and walkways). The more we raise the more work we will be able to do, so your donation will very directly impact the lives of the children and elderly that benefit from the noble work that Light for the Nations does.
