This is for Eric Hartman- to help raise money for his medical expenses. If you have the means, please make a donation.. Any amount helps!

On Sunday, September 5th, 2010- 21 year old Eric Hartman was enjoying a night out in company of good friends following a wedding ceremony and reception. The wedding party and close friends to the newlywed couple were invited to join a ride on a pontoon boat; Eric was one of those invited. In a freak accident, he fell off of the boat, and was unable to swim on his own. He was rescued by several friends, who were able to pull him to shore and give CPR in an attempt to revive him. When paramedics arrived on the scene, he was unconscious. He was emergency airlifted to Clarkson College-Medical Center and upon arrival to the hospital, he was in critical condition.

Eric was in a coma for 13 days following the accident, and the staff of the Clarkson College ICU worked around the clock to keep him stabilized. He was also on a respirator during that time; unable to breathe on his own. Eric has had to undergo test after test, performed by specialists in many departments, such as Neurology, Respiratory and Urology. In an attempt to regain kidney function, Eric must go through dialysis every day, and this will be ongoing for an unspecified length of time. Physical therapists must visit him daily to assist him in regaining his strength so he can walk and do physical activities as he did before the accident.

As of Saturday, September 18th, 2010- Eric has been taken off of the ventilator and moved out of the ICU and to a regular patient recovery room at the Nebraska Medical Center. He is still going through daily rounds of dialysis and physical therapy. Though he is able to eat, breathe and talk on his own, there is no word yet on when he will be released from the medical facility and be able to resume a normal life outside of the hospital room.

As reported by KETV Channel 7 News:
"A 21-year-old man was in critical condition after nearly drowning on Sunday near Fremont. Authorities said Eric Hartman, of Weeping Water, fell off a pontoon boat in the Woodcliff Lake subdivision. The Saunders County sheriff said Hartman wasn't wearing a life jacket. Other passengers on the boat jumped in, found the man and pulled him out of the water. He was taken to a Fremont hospital and then transferred the Nebraska Medical Center. The sheriff said 14 people were on the boat as part of a wedding celebration. He said no wrongdoing was found. "

As you all know, medical expenses can be overwhelming. In Eric's case, even though he does have health insurance (thank god), there will still be substantial amounts billed for his care. Since 9/5/10, his debt will include the emergency medical response, being life-flighted, and the costs of being on life support for an extended stay, appointments with specialists (neurology, urology, respiratory, etc.) in addition to the numerous tests and treatments he has had to have (MRI, daily dialysis, SCUF, etc.) all of which need to be paid, and only a portion will be covered by insurance. With his continued care given by the hospital staff, the debt will continue to grow every day. Already, thousands of dollars are owed to the hospital, and on top of it all, other day to day expenses must be taken care of while Eric is out of work (house payment and other various bills) and all of this responsibility falls on his family...

In an effort to ease some of the financial burden placed on Eric and his family after the accident, I have started this fundraiser in honor of him. He has shown incredible strength and an amazing will to live, even when the situation looked grim. Though I am speaking on behalf of Eric’s friends and family, I think we can all agree that the best thing for Eric right now, is for him to be focused on his own personal recovery, not stressing about bills. For those that know Eric personally, they would mostly describe him as a friendly, energetic, and really down-to-earth guy who is fun to be around. All in all, the world is simply a better place with Eric around. So please, if you have the means, make a donation. Even if it’s only five or ten dollars, any amount will go a long way, I promise you that.

Please contribute to the Eric Hartman Fund today, as it will greatly benefit Eric and his family. All monies donated (NON-tax deductible) will be used to help pay for medical expenses and other household bills. We greatly appreciate your generosity!

Even if you cannot afford to donate any money, please extend some of your time to spread the word about Eric’s cause. Reaching out to others and asking for help, support, even prayers can go a long way to help him recover. Also, friends and family members of Eric will be holding several fundraising events to raise money too, and we so greatly appreciate the individuals that will be in attendance and helping to make each event a successful one.

I will be updating this page often with news about the milestones in Eric’s recovery, dates for upcoming events, and special words from those closest to him, and even Eric himself, so please check back often!

Thank you all SO MUCH for your support and generosity!
As always, keep Eric in your thoughts and prayers.

-Shyla (friend/just one of many who genuinely care)
