It was only a few days ago I first needed to use a cane.

In almost all ways I am extremely healthy for my age (74), but I have severe arthritis in my knees and have been advised I must have a double knee replacement, as my joints have severely deteriorated. I have been able to get by up until now by managing the pain with medication, but now, for the first time, I need a cane to assist me walking. My doctor says I am an excellent candidate for the surgery and should be able to live out the rest of my life quite well with knee replacement surgery.

I have a Medicare advantage program that will cover most of the cost, but it will require co-pays that I just cannot manage. My only income is social security of a little over $1000 a month, plus a little income from my writing, and I can get by with that amount for my basic expenses, but it’s been impossible for me to save enough for the co-pays, so that I can go ahead and schedule the surgery.

I am a single gay man living alone in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My only living relative is a brother who lives in Texas, and is unable to help me raise that money I need.

My passion is writing, and I have written a number of novels, a memoir of my days living in London, and a couple of children’s books. The website for my books is You might enjoy seeing what I do.

I need to raise $2500 to cover hospital co-pays, physical therapy, and additional recovery expenses. I expect it will take two to three months to reach total recovery after the surgery.

I will be so grateful for your help, in any amount, and will personally contact you with a heartfelt thank you.
