About Mindy…

Mindy was always a healthy, happy and active child. She played sports her whole life up until high school, at age 16 she began to have an assortment of intestinal problems. Her senior year in high school she began to throw up everything she ate and drank. This went undiagnosed for about 2 years, during which we almost lost her 3 times. Finally the specialists diagnosed her with Idiopathic Gastroparesis, which means that she has paralysis of the stomach and “idiopathic” just is the doctors way of saying they don’t know why! We were so blessed to find out there was a treatment that could relieve some of the symptoms. Though it was not yet FDA approved, we decided it was our only choice of possibly helping Mindy. So Sept. 2 of 2004, Mindy was to be the 25th person in the nation, and the youngest, to receive a gastric pacemaker. Praise God, because this worked for 6 ½ years and we had our Mindy back. Until one day in Jan. of this year, her symptoms returned. After many doctor visits and adjustments to her pacer, the bad news came. Her body was no longer responding to the pacer. She is only the second documented case to have this happen. Now the only option for her is a sub-total gastrectomy. In short, this means removing 2/3rds of her stomach. It is a very invasive surgery, but her specialists at USC and at Kaiser feel this is her only option that she has left. Mindy never complains…actually most people don’t even know she is sick again. If you know her, I am sure you’ll agree, she is always happy and that she loves life. Her total recovery could take up to a year and her bills will add up. This will be quite a financial burden for her and we don’t want to add anymore stress for her. We as her family would appreciate your PRAYERS and any support during this difficult time in her life.
