Keith's family and friends are creating a fund to help pay deductibles and expenses related to his illness.

No one ever expects it to affect them. You always have the thought in the back of your mind, “that won’t happen to me.” When it does…there are no words that adequately describe what you feel.

In 2009, at the age of 47, I suddenly became ill. That year I made several trips to the emergency room and in one of those trips had an emergency surgery to remove my colon. There is a phrase in the English language that no one ever wants to hear their doctor say—“You have cancer.”

I began receiving chemotherapy through a port in 2010 and went through another surgery to remove an abscess around the original site. After chemo, everything began to look good on my PET scans.

Earlier this year…things changed. A PET scan indicated that the cancer had spread and a cystiscopy was performed to check for bladder cancer. Though these results showed that my bladder was free of cancer, the PET scan presented a harsh reality that I had hoped to avoid. I now have Stage 4 chronic colon cancer.

At the time of diagnosis, I was neither spiritually nor financially prepared to cope with the reality I was facing. After a long period of neglecting God, I have asked Him to come back into my life. Even though I have a place to go when my life on this earth is finished, my wife and grandson will be left with the burden of paying the bills. My wife and grandson have faithfully stood beside me through the numerous doctor visits, chemotherapy treatments, and extremely difficult times. They have truly been a blessing to me that only the Lord could provide.

This is one of the hardest things that I have ever done, swallowing my pride and asking people to help me and my family financially. Normally, if we needed extra money, I would just put in 50 or 60 hour weeks. Now I would really prefer to spend all the time I can with my family. I have not been the best person in the world, I have made many mistakes, and I am sure that there are a lot of causes more worthy than mine. My family, who I may or may not leave behind soon, deserves more than I can give or leave them with right now.

Whether or not you feel led to give to this fund, I thank you and pray God blesses you for taking the time to read this. The money collected will go towards a fund to help pay the deductibles and expenses we have experienced since my illness. Due to the doctor bills, my paycheck has been garnished and my family and I risk facing losing our home and land.

Please pray for us as often as you think of our story. We are so very thankful for any gift you may be able to give.

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” —Luke 6:38
