A life redefined by pain. New Daily Persistant Head Pain leaves Hayley with debilitating head pain for a decade.

I want to tell you about my sister, my best friend. Imagine going to bed one night living the life you have dreamed of. You’re working your dream job as a makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics during the summers; while finishing your business degree at the University of Victoria. This is the world you envisioned for yourself. You control your decisions, your dreams and your destiny. And in an instant this dream is over. You are awoken from sleep by a sudden sharp piercing pain in both temples. Pain so intense that you actually reach up and touch the side of your face to make sure there are not daggers in your temples. These daggers are being thrust inward from either side of your head and you are certain they are going to meet in the middle. This life changing night was ten years, and for Hayley – our daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, spouse, friend and miraculously a mother - every day has been a battle. Since 2002, constant piercing pain, on both sides of her head, 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This is her life; there is no break from pain. The past decade has brought hundreds of GP, Specialists, and emergency room visits trying every treatment possible. Nothing has worked. Eventually Hayley’s Neurologist had found a diagnosis of New Daily Persistent Head Pain. A debilitating type pain that is relentless. In 2007 after the Canadian Medical system had been exhausted we headed south of the border to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. The neurologist at the Mayo Clinic deemed Hayley a candidate for an upcoming study involving electronic nerve stimulation. Multiple trips to Arizona, several surgeries and growing travel bills later Hayley left the hospital with a battery pack the size of a 1990’s cell phone implanted into her groin area. The battery pack is connected to wires that tunnel under the skin, up her back, to the base of her skull. The ends of the wires send electrical stimulation to the base of her skull in the hopes of stopping the nervous system from sending the message of pain to the brain. Devastatingly enough it was not enough relief to provide Hayley a break from the pain. The physicians at the Mayo Clinic are confident that she will gain additional relief if she has further surgery, adding two more points of stimulation tunneled under the skin right into her temples. Hayley’s situation has deteriorated significantly over the past 6 months and she has spent more days’ bed ridden then out of bed. As miracles have it in 2010 Hayley became a mother. Recently Hayley has missed more and more of those special childhood moments. Please help Hayley by supporting her family in efforts to make this surgery a reality. Hayley wants to enjoy the small things in life, blowing bubbles with Sloan, frolicking on the beach and making mud pies. Every aspect of this debilitating illness is costly. Not only financially; but mentally and emotionally. We all do our best to help Hayley in her daily fight to just live life. We need financial help. We need help to afford this next surgical procedure estimated at $70,000 USD. Any additional funds will be applied to travel expenses and follow up treatments. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you, Lovingly, Hayley, Mike and Sloan Kathy (mom) and Grant Barry (dad) and Lorellei All 4 sisters: Meghan (her family Brett and Clara), Shae, Jade and Leah Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, and Cousins Friends
