This is the Mark Schmitt fund. The funds will be used for Mark's medical costs and related expenses..

Dear Friends, Family, and Fellow Community Members,

Over two months ago, Mark Schmitt, a beloved friend and member of our community, suffered traumatic injury to his brain, neck, and back. Mark, 23 years old and from East Hampton, was leaning against a balcony in Springs when it gave way, causing him to fall two stories onto concrete stairs below. He was diagnosed with two broken vertebrae and two broken bones in his face, and showed signs of severe brain swelling. After spending over two months in the intensive care unit at the Stony Brook University Medical Center, Mark is on the road to recovery, yet still suffers from a medical condition called neuro-storming.
We write to you with hope that we can come together as a community in a time of grave need for our dear friend, Mark Schmitt. Mark needs us to be there for him, as we have been there for other members of our small, beautiful, and incredibly supportive community. Unfortunately, with the untimely passing of both his mother and father, Mark has only his siblings, friends, and neighbors to call on for support. This is a vital time for us to act together as a community to do something not only generous, but truly life changing.
As many of us know, Mark Schmitt has been bred as a true Bonacker. He is a driven musician with a passion for reggae, rock, and every genre in between. Like many East Hampton locals, Mark has a thirst for waves, continuously paddling out at his favorite beach, Indian Wells. Mark’s hunger for music and surfing, however, pales in comparison to his desire to put a smile on the face of everyone he knows. Despite the many challenges Mark has faced in the past couple of years, he has nonetheless continued striving to improve the lives of his friends and the strength of our community. Mark is a charismatic and vivacious young man. Even if you do not know him personally, surely someone you know has a story of his renowned thirst for life and care for others. Like many in our community, Mark has had his fair share of rough times, yet that has never deterred him from his beloved demeanor as a whole-hearted person with a desire for a happy, fulfilled, and meaningful life.
With his generous spirit, propensity for life, and deep love for Bonac in mind, we hope that we can come together as a community to help Mark Schmitt in his time of need. Please keep our fund, Friends for Schmitt, in mind this holiday season. We understand that times are tough for many members of our community and greatly appreciate any contribution at all – regardless of size – that you can make on behalf of our friend Mark. Mark’s hospital bills are truly immense and only growing. With his having no parents, health insurance, or financial stability, every contribution will help.
We truly thank you for taking the time to hear Mark’s story--and hope that you can find the means to help our dear friend.
