By donating to Elijah Agyemang, you will give a young boy with hydrocephalus light to lead a better life.

Elijah Agyemang, a 2 year old Ghanaian boy, suffers from hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is the build-up of too much cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. This causes brain damage and eventually death because of too much pressure build-up in the brain. His legs are too weak that he cannot walk. He is still being breast-fed and cannot move himself around, but only changes positions when someone moves him. Because Elijah lives in a remote area where there are only two families, he does not have children to play with and sits in a room or outside all day, every day. In his medical condition, he will not receive an education and will live out the rest of his few years of life in this desolate area if he does not recieve surgery for a shunt. Due to the economic conditions of Elijah’s family, they do not have health insurance. Even if Elijah was insured, it would not cover the complete costs of the surgery. If Elijah does not have this surgery, he will die.

Costs for a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VP shunt):
Surgical Materials: $1,000
Scans: 3 @ $350 each = $1,050
Hospital Stay/Transport Cost: $450
Without Insurance: $900
Total: $3,400

100% of the proceeds of this campaign will be used for Elijah's surgery, which will be performed at the Okofoanoky Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana. The money that is left over from this campaign will be saved to pay for any further medical needs that may arise for Elijah.

During a Project CURE medical trip to the Tepa District Hospital in Tepa, Ashanti Region, Ghana, in September of 2010, eight Americans were blessed with having the opportunity to give medical service at the Tepa Hospital in Tepa, Ghana. During this trip Elijah and his mother traveled 27 km to the Tepa Hospital and reached the hearts of the whole medical team. The hospital's pharmacy technician who had been working closely with the Project CURE team, urged the members to take Elijah’s story back to the United States and ask people to open their hearts so that Elijah may have a chance to live a better quality of life. In collaboration with the staff at the Tepa District Hopsital, Tim Africa Aid Ghana and the members of the September 2010 Ghana Project CURE team, this is an effort to raise $4,000 for Elijah’s surgery.

While this campaign has no religious affiliation, the Elijah, Be Our Light Campaign name derives from the lyrics of the song "Christ, Be Our Light."

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.

1. Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.

2. Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has pow’r to save us.
Make us your living voice.

3. Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed.

4. Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone.

5. Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.
