The family and friends of Miguel M are raising funds for medical expenses in his battle with Kawasaki Syndrome and heart disease.

In the summer of 2011, at the age of 53, Miguel had a sudden, unexpected heart attack. He has a rare disease called Kawasaki syndrome. It causes an irregular shape of the heart blood vessles so his heart was not receiving enough blood supply. He acquired this disease as a child and it went undiagnosed for decades. His active lifestyle helped save his life.

The disease was only first described in 1967 by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki. It usually effects children under 5 years old and there will be 4000 new cases of Kawasaki syndrome this year. It first appears as a high fever with a red rash and swollen tongue. If a child is treated with the proper medications, heart damage may be avoided. If left untreated, as in Miguel's case, it can lead to heart disease.

Miguel was enjoying an active, happy life with his wife and two children. He was not known to have any medical problems. Suddenly, he had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. It was a shock to discover he had this illness. Fortunately, he received some of the best medical care in the country. He was placed on a heart pump, had a quintuple by-pass operation, and was placed in a medically induced coma for 10 days. His recovery has been steady but difficult. He receives much support from his wife and children.

Though Miguel and his family are moving forward, uncovered medical expenses have proven to be a difficult. Adding to this burden, are the continued costs of treatment for this disease. These funds would assist in repaying the noble and caring medical team that saved his life.

All funds raised will be used for medical expenses, only. Any additional amounts will be divided equally between The Kawasaki Disease Fondation and Giveforward.
