Palmer family of Toledo awaits lung transplant for 3yr old son, Bryson, @ St. Louis Children's Hospital. Initial goal met & increased!

Bryson was diagnosed with stage 3 neuroblastoma (on kidney) when he was less than 5 months old, Feb 2009. He underwent a rigorous 1.5 years of treatment and has been cancer-free for 1.5 yrs. He recently developed pulmonary fibrosis, presumably a result of the treatments to rid the cancer.

He and his parents came to St. Louis Children's Hospital June 3 for a 3-day evaluation, while his 2yo brother Braydon stayed back in Toledo with friends and family.

The medical team stunned the family, suggesting they remain in St. Louis indefinitely due to the fragility of his condition (35% lung function). Test results were good, and Bryson was placed on the Lung Transplant List Monday, June 11 and NOW awaits a set of donor lungs (...of O+ blood type for an approx 22# child....) to save his life.

Having come to St. Louis for a "3 day visit," both parents have now been away from work (unpaid) for nearly 2 wks! The first week was spent in hotels, and while they were expected to stay in my guest room (29mi from hospital), the couple has slept all week in a tiny Pediatric ICU patient room with their son. Virtually all of their meals have been take-out or fast food, taking turns eating in a kitchenette since food is prohibited in PICU patient rooms. (Bryson's "meals" are delivered via tube to his belly, as are his meds.)

Bryson's father must return to work, leaving mom & son in the PICU, which is heart-breaking for him.

Even if discharged from the hospital, while he's on the Transplant List, Bryson must stay in the area (50miles, 45 min max) so he can get to the hospital immediately should surgeons receive a match for him.

I am hopeful Bryson's breathing stabilizes to the point that he can be discharged to enjoy life outside the hospital for a while (even if on mobile oxygen), enoying some fun in St. Louis even before they get into one of 8 Ronald McDonald House apartment near the hospital (one family is ahead of them on the waiting list). The RMH apts are NOT free as many believe: it will cost the family $750/month & require a $600 deposit!

The family has experienced mounting, continuing, and escalating medical expenses with an impending lung transplant. In order to care for and provide necessary treatments and medical care for him, they have been on unpaid leave from their jobs. They are faced with out-of-town expenses such as hotels, fuel, and meal costs. Once in RMH apts, they will have a kitchen to prepare their own meals; they will exist on partial income yet still have regular bills at home.

Please make a donation to help lighten the load for this family in crisis. Your contributions will assist with medical bills and out of town living expenses (incl RMH apt lodging when available).

Thank you for your compassion toward this young family in need!
