Awareness and Prevention Through Art needs your help to continue its work towards the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Mozambique.

Awareness and Prevention Through Art (APTA) is a grass roots organization started by artists and activists to address the HIV and AIDS pandemic in Mozambique.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 70% of new HIV and AIDS infections in 2011. On average, 500 new infections occur every day in Mozambique and over 400,000 children are orphaned as a result of the pandemic. The impact on Mozambican communities is severe and pervasive.
Awareness and Prevention Through Art needs your help to continue its work towards the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Mozambique.

The mission of the APTA project is to use the arts and arts education to develop HIV and AIDS awareness within Mozambican youth, local communities and the international community. Starting age appropriate education campaigns before children become sexually active will have a greater impact in preventing HIV and AIDS than education subsequent to sexual activity. With this idea in mind, APTA implements art centered initiatives to target primary and secondary school children.

APTA believes if given the opportunity individuals can, and will, make informed and healthy choices about their lifestyles regarding HIV and AIDS. Almost 50% of the Mozambican population are under the age of 15; by targeting the youth, we target the future, making an AIDS free generation possible in Mozambique.

APTA holds exhibitions of the artwork created by students and instructors both locally and internationally. These exhibitions bring issues and information about HIV and AIDS to the forefront. All proceeds from exhibitions are returned back into the project to fund future HIV and AIDS awareness and prevention endeavors.

At present, limited funding for this project is coming from our own pockets until sufficient sources of funding are secured in late 2012. In order for this project to continue, we need financial assistance to provide art materials, classroom set-up costs and transport fees. The $6,000 we are requesting will cover the initial costs for the second term of our project (January-June 2012). Any amount, great or small, makes a difference! If you would like to speak to me personally about this project please feel free to contact me by phone at (301)-518-9946 or via email at Thank you for your time and support!
