Damon Wilson's Total Pacreatectomy and Islet Auto Transplant.

The family and friends of Damon Wilson are uniting to raise money to help him win his battle against Hereditary Pancreatitis.

Damon now 12 was diagnosed with Hereditary Pancreatitis at 6 years old. It is currently one of the rarest pancreatic disorders with less than 1000 cases in the United States.

Damon has had more than 14 Attacks in the last 6 years. Though he has had to learn to cope with the debilitating day to day pain and nausea over the years, the boring hospital stays, some lasting a week. The damage to his pancreas is progressing and surgery has become necessary. Between the random attacks, and increasing chance of diabetes, there is nearly a 40% chance of having pancreatic cancer someday. Damon's only option is a Total Pacreatectomy and Islet Auto Transplant.

The team at Amplatz Childrens hospital in MN. Will perform the surgery in an 8-10 hour procedure. They will be removing Damon's pancreas, spleen, small intestine, duodenum, gall bladder and part of the stomach since they share the same blood supply.

We need our pancreas to create enzymes that digest food and make insulin for our body. Without a pancreas Damon will have to take enzymes in the form of a pill for the rest of his life.

To lessen the chances of diabetes they will dissolve the pancreas completely in a solution (over 5 hours while in surgery) and then isolate the insulin creating cells called Islets. And will in turn put these cells and inject them into the portal vein of the liver. Over the next three months these cells will make their new home in his liver.

In 33% of the patients. This transplant prevents them from having to take insulin at all. We are hoping and praying for the best.

Since they are also removing his Spleen, He will also have to be on an antibiotic regimen for about a year.

Damon is expected to stay at the hospital for eight weeks. You can just imagine the stress and the worries the family is feeling. Maria will be staying at the hospital with Damon for the duration of the stay and Shane will travel on his day off to unite the family in MN.

Your very generous contribution will help with expenses associated with day care, travel, food and lodging. You will also be helping with the medical expenses not covered by Insurance.

Please give forward to Damon and the family.
Any amount no matter how small will help in such an accumulative manner. We will in turn pay this forward to someone else in need.
