49er Challenge to raise $49,000 in 49 days with $49 donations to pay Medical Bills of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) Champ, Lauren James Wik

I'm turning 49 on October 14th. So the other day, my dad asks me, "What do you want for your birthday this year, Sherri?" I had a birthday celebration planned, but so much has changed. My dad is a 71 year old, San Francisco native who was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) on June 6th, 2012. I'm almost 5'2", he's 6'3" and has always quite literally been a giant to me. My big, strong dad. So much has changed in the past 4 months. This charming, once independent man, is now frail, unsteady on his feet, out of breath after making his way across the room, and nearly impossible to understand when speaking, from the damage ALS has done to his throat muscles. He's in the good part of the disease now. Hard as it is, he can still move. The days ahead are hard to think about. ALS is known as the cruelest of diseases for what it does to your body, while keeping your mind sharp, right up to the end. It's also one of the most expensive diseases. No one could prepare for such rare and devastating bad luck. BEFORE all this,...I was going to celebrate my 49th birthday, With a San Francisco 49ers themed party. I would like to do it a little different now. Please help celebrate my 49th by donating $49 in 49 days to help my father with his medical expenses. Maybe I can even get him to a game?! "What do I want for my birthday? I want you to be happy for the rest of your life, Dad. I want you to feel the out pouring of love and care that surprises us in the darkest of times." My gift can't be bought in a store this year. But it's out there :) *49% of the total donations will be donated to The Forbes Norris ALS Clinic and Research Center, San Francisco, in my father's name. Go Niners!
