He’s a typical 2-year old boy. He loves to run, jump, tumble, and play. He likes to explore the world, taking on new adventures every day. He enjoys eating the icing off of his cupcakes. He loves cars—the toys, the Disney movies, even the big ones!

But there is one not so typical thing about Makai. He is a very sick little boy. On August 9, 2013 he was diagnosed with Malignant Rhabdoid Tumour (MRT), a form of cancer that his doctors have deemed “very aggressive”. Since his parents made the shocking discovery, his left kidney has been removed, he has undergone an intensive 3-week radiation treatment, and he is now completing a rigorous cycle of chemotherapy through March 2014.

Understandably, there have been a few setbacks. With a severely compromised immune system, Makai has spent several additional days in the hospital to fight off infections. Without a strong appetite or taste sensory, his parents find it challenging to give him vital nutrients.  Of course, he doesn’t understand why any of this is happening to him. He just wants to be a typical 2-year old boy.

On the happier side of things, Makai recently found out that he will be big brother to a little sister in February 2014! Not only does this mean a new playmate, but it also means someone that he will eventually have to protect, teach new things, and maybe even irritate just a little bit. Granted, Makai doesn’t quite understand the magnitude of his big brother role. Right now he simply points to his mommy’s belly, then his own tummy, and says, “Baby!”

Since the Summer of 2013 Makai and his family have been through a physical and emotional rollercoaster. Having just entered the chemotherapy stage, there are many more drops, twists, and turns to come. Obviously, his parents’ financial burden has increased. Their health insurance does not cover all of his medical expenses, and given the intensity of his treatments and the fragility of his health, his parents have had to drastically reduce their work hours. Despite these challenges, Makai’s parents are determined to do everything they can to help him successfully conquer this ordeal.

The friends and family of Makai have joined forces to try and build a larger community of support. We recognize the personal hardships that many of you may already face. However, we also know that small things really do add up. Anything that anyone provides can help ease the financial burden for the Foggs and their handsome little boy. If you are willing and able to provide assistance, we thank you so much for your kindness and consideration. We all look forward to the time when Makai is able to run, jump, tumble, and play in perfect health!
