Blankey Blessings is a project that will provide 100 homeless children with a homemade, fleece blanket, storybook, and a Pillow Pet.

When I was a little girl, I had a nightly ritual every night before bed. It started with a bedtime story from my mom or dad--Mom told the most endearing stories while Dad tended to stray away from the plot a little, but nevertheless, those were such lovely times. After that I would be tucked into my warm, snuggly bed with my longtime pal-Pink Doggy. I was beautifully blessed with a storybook child hood. However, there are unfortunately many children in America who will never get that storybook bedtime.

That is why Blankey Blessings was created. Blankey Blessings is a project I created to provide at least 100 homeless children in the Indiana and Michigan areas with some of the staple comforts of childhood: A blankey (blanket), a storybook, a stuffed animal, and oodles of love! These blankets will be homemade, fleece blankets for softness and uniqueness. The storybook we will provide for the children is called "You are Special" by Max Lucado. The children will each all receive a Pillow Pet as well. Most importantly, the children will receive a homemade card from supporters, donors, and/or makers of the blankets. This project is an attempt to provide even the slightest bit of joy and happiness to a homeless child. It may only be one tiny step taken in the fight against this injustice, but as Mother Teresa says, "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love." The biggest aim of this project is to show that there are people who care about these kids. There is goodness in the world, and I want these kids to feel so loved and appreciated.

There are four main stages to this project:
Stage 1: Fundraising- To provide children with these simple comforts, we must raise about $5,850. These costs include the blankets-$2000, the Pillow Pets-$1,500, the books, $1,500, packaging/handling costs-$850. These funds need to be raised by Black Friday-November 23, 2012. It is on this day that we will shift into stage 2 of this project.

Stage 2: Buying supplies-Because of the incredible deals on Black Friday, I will be buying the fabric on this day.

Stage 3: Assembling-This stage will be composed of volunteers who will come and assemble these easy-to-make blankets. Each maker of a blanket will also have the opportunity to write a personal note/card to send along with the blanket.

Stage 4: Distributing-Sometime in mid December, the blankets will be distributed to the children in the Michigan/Indiana areas.

How can you help? There are many ways: prayer, volunteering, and funding. I am aware that money is tight right now, but even if you had a spare dollar lying around, I would be happy with that. You see, all it takes is a network of people. You put in a dollar or two and then send this link to 100 of your friends. They put in a dollar or two and then send it to some of their friends. The movement keeps moving and growing one small act of charity at a time.

Also, if you would like to get a group together and go in on a Blankey Blessing together, it comes out to be about $58.50. If you let me know that you and your friends did that, I will gladly let you send a picture of your group and attach any notes or encouragement along with the package. You could easily get a group of 10 people to pitch in $6 together to provide a child with a Blankey Blessing.

This project means the world to me, and I am a firm believer in taking small steps to make big change.
