This is the "Back to Uganda" fund. All the funds will be used traveling costs, I will be living as minimally as possible, and sewing kits.

In the summer of 2009, a friend and I headed to the northern part of Uganda to work with a tribe in one of the longest running IDP (Internally Displaced Peoples) Camp. For 2 months we lived in absolute poverty and worked with the Eteso people. For the last 20 years, their country has been in war and has just recently become a little safer. So they are just starting to find some sort of normalcy.
I went to learn how war affects people and to teach art. While I did do that, I found most of the time I sat mending clothing. Most people there have 2 pairs of clothing that they've worn for the last 5 to....? years, so you can imagine what it looks like. Another observation I saw is that there is not much opportunity for women to get a job. The land is drying up slowly, so crops are doing poorly, and when I was there, people were literally starving to death. They have no way of creating their own food, and thus no money to go in town to purchase some.
In August of this year I am going back and heading up again to the north and finding women to teach how to sew. I'll be bringing self-contained sewing kits and giving them to each woman I work with. This is a fully sustainable way that once I teach the women and give them the first supplies, with the money they raise by mending others clothes, they can go into town and buy more thread and supplies. Best of all they don't have to depend on anyone else for money, can feed themselves and their children.
