Carmel is an absolutely exceptional young woman who is living with severe and debilitating lung disease.

She was diagnosed in January of 2014 with both Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) and Interstitial Lung Disease. PAH is a rare and incurable lung condition in which the walls of the pulmonary arteries harden, making oxygenation of the blood problematic. As a result, the heart tries to compensate which eventually leads to right heart failure. Since Carmel's diagnosis, she has been on constant supplemental oxygen as well as an intense regimen of daily medications. While her skilled team of medical specialists have tried a myriad of different treatments in that time, unfortunately Carmel has not responded positively to them. Currently, she is undergoing the rigorous evaluation process to determine if she will be an eligible candidate for a double lung transplant.

Living with chronic illness affects every aspect of her life. Everyday is a juggling act of managing oxygen equipment, mixing up daily medication, and getting to and from medical appointments on top of the substantial fatigue and diminished physical capacity that accompanies lung disease. She has also endured numerous hospitalizations and frequent invasive medical procedures. I go up to Seattle to help out as often as I can and, even as an able-bodied person, I get exhausted after just a day or two trying to keep up with all that needs to get done daily.

But those of you who have the pleasure of knowing Carmel personally, also know that she has not let this misfortune diminish her spirit. She has somehow retained a positive outlook throughout the very rapid progression of her disease. And she remains one of the most wise and compassionate people I have ever encountered.

One of the many miracles that has taken place since her diagnosis is that she met and just recently married her soulmate, Lynn Bondi. Their families and community could not be happier that these two incredible people have found each other. But they need our help.

Financial support will help the newlyweds in so many ways. Currently, Carmel is only able to work a handful of hours per week (on a good week) and Bondi frequently needs to miss work in order to attend doctor appointments and/or provide needed care. A financial cushion would ensure that their rent, bills, and daily living expenses are covered while relieving some of the stress of frequently missing work. Below are just a few of the many other things that raised funds would help to offset:

* handicap accessible transportation to and from a pulmonary rehab facility (outside of Seattle proper) for the specialized physical therapy needed to make Carmel a stronger candidate for transplant

* possible "gap coverage" if Carmel's COBRA health insurance is discontinued before her medicare coverage kicks in

* A "Beat the Winter" plan: If Carmel is able to travel, the couple has been considering migrating south to somewhere dryer in hopes it will keep her from being hospitalized for the 4th year in a row during the wet PNW winter months

There are countless other ways that financial support would help Carmel and Bondi. As their situation can change very rapidly, I will try my best to keep up to date information on this site. If you are not able to contribute financially at this time, consider offering your positive thoughts/prayers/intentions as we have also found them to be invaluable. Thank you so much for your support!!
