Blue Lighthouse Ministries was created in 2010 by a mom of an abused child in the hope to promote Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention through public speakers at schools, parenting classes, flyers, and hosting a Child Abuse Awareness Rally locally.

I started this Ministry to let those who have been affected my Child Abuse know that there IS a light at the end of this tunnel.  I am hoping to promote awareness through public speaking at schools, holding classes, passing out information packets, and holding a Child Abuse Awareness Rally locally.  I am hoping that Cristian's story will change a life, and possibly save a child from being abused.

When something like this happens, you don't stop thinking about it; especially when it happens to your own child. It doesn't go away. Sure, you can function and go about life, but not the same as before. You eat, sleep, and breathe it. You do everything you can not to let it consume you and control your life.

2 1/2 years later, Cristian's still considered legally blind and still has night terrors, but he has come SO far since 2007. My life has changed tremendously since then. You know, when I was in elementary school I visited Riley Hospital. I never EVER imagined I'd be visiting my own child in it. In high school and in college, I wrote reports about the effects of child abuse. I was involved in Key Club in high school and visited shelters like St. Jude's House and spoke with those who were abused or children who were abused. I remember the day in 2007 I read the article when Kandon Allen Riley was abused by his mother's boyfriend. I didn't even know this family (at the time), but I cried all the way home. I couldn't imagine being his mom. I never EVER dreamed I'd be directly effected myself. Nobody ever thinks it can happen to them. It does...

Here's Cristian's story:

Between mid-July and mid-August 2007, Cristian Nicholas Fravel suffered unexplained illnesses including hair loss, lesions inside his mouth and eyelids, two air pockets in the back of his throat, retna hemorrhaging, and a displaced lens. Doctors have not been able to officially diagnose the cause of these illnesses, other than "inflicted trauma". The team of specialists at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana have NEVER seen anything like Cristian's condition. It appeared to many as if someone was intentually trying to kill this innocent little boy. We believe that Cristian's mother's ex-boyfriend is the cause of his injuries. This individual has NOT yet been charged. However, we later discovered that he had earlier in 2007 been charged with Felony Neglect of a Dependent for the abuse of his very own daughter when she was just 2 months old! There are numerous references in the medical reports indicating "suspected child abuse", "non-accidental injury", and/or "inflicted trauma", yet the Justice System has failed us. We are hopeful that someone or something will shed light on this case and help us to get justice for Cristian as well! Cristian is now legally blind in his left eye. He underwent his 1st surgery to remove the displaced lens in October 2007. He may have to have 2 more surgeries by the end of this year, to correct the eye crossing, and another one by the time he is 9 years old, to implant a new lens from a generous organ donor. Everyday, Cristian continues to grow just like any other little boy. He has learned to walk again, and slowly trust again. It has almost been 3 years since this family's lives were shattered by such a cruel and heartless individual, but we continue to grow stronger each passing day and fight for what we love-Cristian!

I feel as if God is letting me know we can only go up from here. That aside from the 'wounds' of abuse, the 'scars' left will help us to help others as well. I will never forget I am truly blessed that Cristian is a survivor, and it could have ended WAY worse. The 'beauty in the suffering' is all of the great people I have met along the way; in person, online, support groups, etc. and those who I became even closer with because of it. I don't understand why tragedy brings people closer together or further apart, but God knows, and he has his reasons why I gained such beautiful friends and lost some others. I trust he knows what he's doing.  Please join me in educating others on the Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness!  Thank you!

On behalf of every child abuse victim's family, we want to thank you for your support, both financial and emotional.

May God Bless You All,

Kari Fravel
