On Nov. 16, 2010 when she was 20-months-old, Maddison was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. A few days prior, after what had seemed to be days worth of normal toddler behavior, Maddison said that she didn’t feel good. After being checked out by a doctor, she was sent home without any diagnoses.
But Sam and Lori Gladden knew that something was seriously wrong with Maddison. What would later be telltale signs of diabetes - a cut on Maddison’s foot that wouldn’t heal, constant thirst, weight loss, and a myriad of other indicators - Lori contacted a nurse who confirmed the possibility of diabetes.
The following day, the 16th, Maddison was taken
back to the doctor, where she had a blood test that
determined she did in fact have Type 1 diabetes.
Because of the serious nature of diabetes and its effects if undected, Maddison’s body, by this point, was in a critical state, slowly shutting down and putting her just days before
within days of a diabetic coma.
She was taken to the hospital, where she was stabilized, and then was transported to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, where she stayed for one week.
The Gladden family’s life changed immediately. And Maddison’s life changed because of diabetes.
