Please read my story. All funds will be use for the sole purpose to install a French Drain System and to offset any other expenses.

In April of 2011, several tornadoes struck the town where I live. The tornadoes left a lot of damage to homes, businesses, and local schools. Everyone's life including my own, was turned upside down on that day.

My home did substain water damage from the rain. I filed a claim with my homeowner's insurance and the claim was denied. The insurance company classified the damage as "water infiltration." There is a clause in my homeowner's policy that plainly states, "it does not cover any outside water that infiltrates the home." What caused this? The French drain system failed during the heavy rains and the insurance company said I failed to properly maintain the drain. How does one maintain a French drain system??? I live outside the city limits and property owners are responsible for their own storm water run offs.

Since the town was declared a Federal Disaster, I turned to FEMA for help. The claim was denied the reason: Living four/five miles away from the actual path of one of the tornadoes no assitance could be provided to me. I went to other non-governmental agenies seeking financial assistance because FEMA denied me assistance they denied me as well. Here it is over 18 months and I still need assitance with repair work to my home both inside and out. I do work a full-time job but I do not have the extra financial means that is needed to cover this cost.

One contractor is willing to work with me and has recommended the following: Demolition must be done in the den/laudry room area --- removal of the damage drywall and the insulation, (check for mold) removal of the carpet and carpet padding and the vinyl flooring. I will paint these areas to help off set some of the cost. The flooring must be replace with "basement friendly" flooring.

The other suggestion by the contractor - because my back yard is on a slope - Redirect the water away from the foundation of the home, and install a whole new french drain system. This will help to eliminiate the infiltration of any rainwater in the future. Landscape the yard with a "good root base" grass system.
