Friends of Franky are raising money to help his family pay for his funeral services. Proceeds will go to Franky's brother, Luis.

I first met Franky in June of 2010 when I was volunteering to grant his wish. Franky was 17 when I met him and his family. He was chosen to have his wish granted because he had a form of bone cancer in his leg, called Ewing’s Sarcoma, which was a devastating diagnosis for a young kid who had a love of sports. He had to quit playing sports due to his illness and wasn’t walking without assistance. But, I knew when I first saw his big smile that there was something special about Franky and that his wish experience would be just as special.

Franky’s illness was filled with many ups and downs. As time passed and we kept in touch via email, there would be time periods that he felt great and thought he was doing so much better and then a few months later I would here from his older brother that his health was on the decline again. Franky originally made a wish to take a trip to Disney World, not because he liked Mickey Mouse or wanted to see Cinderella’s castle, but because he knew his 2 year old niece (who lived with Franky’s family) would love the experience and he wanted to choose a wish that his whole family could enjoy. Sadly, Franky’s health took a turn for the worse as it was nearing time for his wish trip to Disney World and he wasn’t well enough to travel.

Due to his health, Franky decided to change his wish. I was certain that he would choose to meet an athlete this time, being such a huge sports fan, but I didn’t take into consideration what a truly amazing person he is. He again made a wish that was not for him, but this time for his mom. His mom had not had the greatest dental care growing up in Mexico and was noticeably embarrassed of her smile. Franky knew this and decided that his mom should “have a beautiful smile that matched her beauty on the inside” and wished that his mom could have her teeth fixed. Due to the selfless nature of Franky’s wish we held a very special party for Franky at a restaurant at Navy Pier. Many of his cousins were in attendance and we surprised Franky with some fun gifts from very generous donors. It was a wonderful day and we were all so excited to be able to celebrate such an amazing kid!

In the year that has passed since Franky’s wish, his health has continued to decline. Once able to walk with the help of a crutch, Franky is now bedridden and nearing the end of his days. Hospice has been called into his home to help make his final days as peaceful as possible. His family is now faced with the burden of trying to plan for his cremation and funeral services while trying to make sure Franky is as comfortable as possible these last days. Due to financial circumstances, the family is unable to pay for the final arrangements, as Franky’s brother Luis is currently the sole provider for the family of five. I ask that you would please look deep into your heart and consider making a gift to help ease the pain that Franky’s family is currently facing. Big or small, your gift is greatly appreciated by Franky’s family and will make a difference in their lives. Thank you.
