Turning baked goodies into medical funds for an awesome kid with cerebral palsy!
Malachi and his identical twin brother Jaden are growing into funny, bright and compassionate little boys. However, Malachi's brain damage at birth remains a significant obstacle in his ability to run, jump and play like his brother does.
Through regular Anat Baniel Method lessons and other interventions, Malachi's cognition, speech, fine motor and gross motor continue to improve, especially in recent months. As his family, we have all worked hard to provide him with the very best therapies and equipment to help him fulfill his greatest potential.
However, this has come at a high price and as yet there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. In 2013, we spent $15,000 on out-of-pocket medical costs.
This is all very doomy-and-gloomy sounding, isn't it?
Well, in 2012, Malachi's mama Shasta wrote and published a board book called Dark and Light: A Love Story in Black and White (available for purchase at http://darkandlightbooks.com/book-store/). The campaign was a huge success and taught her that there is nothing more powerful nor joyful than a community coming together in service.
We come to our community again to ask for support in order to offer Malachi the best start in life we can. Your dollars can have a real, direct and immediate impact on Malachi's life and future functionality.
For 2014, we are planning to provide Malachi with six courses of Anat Baniel Method lessons, a trip to New York for top-quality dynamic ankle-foot orthotics, an 8-week course of scalp acupuncture, hippotherapy and music therapy. Because Malachi continues to have poor weight gain, a major focus will also be figuring out a nutritional system that works for him, with a gastrointestinal tube and its associated co-payment becoming more and more of a possibility.
For local donors or those who can pay a bit more for shipping, Malachi's wonderfully supportive community is offering a dozen fresh-baked goodies per $20 donation. These cookies, pies and chocolates (including a gluten-free option!) will be available for pick up during our bake sale at Hillsdale Community Church, (6948 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219) from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 9. These goodies will make the perfect Valentine's Day gift for your friends, family, co-workers and classmates! Please PRINT your receipt and bring it to the bake sale!
So donate now and Show Your Love to Malachi and to your loved ones this Valentine's Day!
