This is Erika Weissenborn's fundraising page for her service learning trip to Uganda. Please show your support!

As you may know, I'm about to finish my B.Sc. In Food, Nutrition and Health at UBC. In the past year I have taken a particular interest in International Nutrition and Development. This lead me to apply to UBC's International Service Learning Initiative. I have been accepted to go to Uganda this summer, along side classmates, to volunteer with The Aids Support Organization (TASO – www.tasouganda.org.) TASO is an NGO based in Uganda and their mission is to contribute to the prevention of HIV infection as well as improving the quality of life for those affected by the disease. My classmates and I will be assisting them in designing a Nutrition component for their existing programs related to HIV/Aids support. In addition to my placement in Uganda I will be completing an academic component that is designed to build on knowledge of International Nutrition.

Once in Uganda I will be spending 12 weeks (May 12-August 5) at one of TASO's 11 regional offices. We will most likely be living with host families in the towns of Mbale, Masaka, or Jinja. I have not been told of the specifics of my placement yet because UBC is very cautious to not overstep their boundaries and waits for the community partners to place us where help is needed most. International Service Learning focuses on social justice, not charity. The goal of these projects is to assist well established local partners in their strides to address local and regional issues.

Where will this take me in the future?
I have always been interested in Healthcare and Nutrition, but wasn't quite sure how to combine this with my passion for travel and helping those less privileged than me. I feel like I have finally found the ideal career path: International Nutrition. When I return from Uganda I will start to look further into Masters programs in Global and Public Health. I am also interested in doing a youth internship with CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency – www.cida.gc.ca) to the gain the experience that I need to succeed in this field. I am incredibly excited about my placement in Uganda, as it is my first experience volunteering in the field of International Health and Development.

My challenge before I leave in May is to acquire the funds to make this experience possible. My goal is $5000, which is broken down into: $3000 for the placement (room, board, academic component), $2200 for flights, $200 for travel insurance, $600 for vaccines and antimalarials (which I now know the importance of!) Any donation you make is greatly appreciated! I wanted to make clear that the donations being made will not go directly to TASO, but rather to help me travel to Africa and use my knowledge to make an impact. Donations can made through cash, cheque, or online through this website. There is also an alternate way of donating directly to UBC if you would like a tax deductible receipt - Contact me if you would like to donate this way. Any amounts that I cannot cover from fundraising will be covered by student loans and credits.

Thank-you for your time! I will be keeping everyone updated through my blog http://erikaugandatrip.blogspot.com.

I have lowered my fundraising goal to $3500 because I have just received two very generous donations through cheque instead of the website.
Katherine Johnston and Andrew Scott - $500
Hans and Inge Weissenborn - $1000
Thank-you very much!!
