When she was three months old, she came down with an illness that caused her to have a very high fever and then a stroke. This caused her disability, Cerebral Palsy. She was raised by her mother until she was 14 years old. At that time she was sent to live at Hillside House in Santa Barbara, Ca. for 19 years. I've known Gerry since about 1970. It was at Hillside House that I met Gerry for the first time when I was a teenager. I was able to serve Gerry, with my young women's church group, and help her do things she couldn't do for herself. Eventually I graduated from high school and went off to college and we lost touch. Gerry stayed in another handicapped home in San Luis Obispo and then get her first apartment in Atascadero, Ca. She eventually moved back to Santa Barbara County. She now lives in Lompoc, Ca. I was surprised and excited when I came to church one Sunday morning and saw my friend, Gerry. She asked me to help her get a Service dog and I am happy to do it. Gerry has numerous service dogs throughout her life and they have helped her greatly. In Gerry's words: "A new service dog will help me to live more independently by opening and closing doors, answering the door, and picking up dropped objects. Most importantly, a service dog will allow me to go out in public alone, and take care of everyday errands independently. Because of my speech difficulties, communication is challenging. In public, a service dog can carry packages, give money to the cashier, go for help if I have an emergency, and help me cross the street." Additional money is needed for a renting a handicapped van with a lift, and because she will have to stay at the school for 2 weeks to get trained with the dog, money for a hotel, gas & food. Gerry has already raised on her own $3,700.00 by just having bake sales and getting donations. I have never seen anyone more focused on a cause. She doesn't let her disability slow her down. But she needs a better & faster way to raise the rest of the money. Please help her reach her goal by donating through this site. All the proceeds will go to helping her get her Service dog. We are trying to raise the money by the first week in May. So please don't delay in helping Gerry. If you have any questions, please e-mail me. I am listed as the beneficiary so to help Gerry distribute the funds. Thank you for your help. Gerry's friend, Diana Miller
