Tina Gentzel's Story

Tina Gentzel has lived in Centre County, PA her entire life. She is married to Paul Gentzel, has three children, Brad Firth, Joshua and Allison Gentzel. She lives with her husband and her two spoiled Boston Terrior dogs, Sissy and Little Man. In her free time she loved to go to garage sales, going on motorcycle rides with husband and friends, boating, watching football with friends and family. She also enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, always trying new recipes and spoiling her dogs.

Unfortunately, in 2008 she was diagnosed with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension which is a noncurable, life threatening disease of the lungs. It means she has high blood pressure in her lungs. She has been able to control it with certain medications but over time it has progressively gottten worse and the only recourse now is a double lung transplant. To look at her she doesn't look like a sickly person but having high blood pressure causes her a great deal of shortness of breath, low oxygen level in her lungs. She has extremely low exercise tolerance and at times lightheadedness and dizziness. She is on oxygen at night. Performing normal activities is a struggle and very tiring for her. She has undergone a battery of testing and is now eligible for a transplant. She has been evaluated at University Presbyterian Medical Center in Pittsburgh for a year now, where she will have the surgery. Because of this, she needs the help and prayers of family, friends, and the community.

The surgery and recovery may take up to 3 months at which time she will spend time in a boarding house close to the hospital for her appointments, check ups, and bronchoscopies. Not many families have the resourses to meet the financial obligations of transportation such as traveling expenses for pre and post surgery evaluations, as well as consideration expenses required to stay there during the recovery period. At times like this, the help of friends, family, and community is greatly needed and appreciated to make the outcome successful. Tina's family and friends have the task of raising funds to assist with the monumental expenses needed for the out of pocket expenses, antirejection medicines, and after care.

She is hoping to have a longer and better quality of life.
