The family and friends of Chase Jensen are getting together to help pay for equipment and medical bills that insurance will not cover.

Chase was born at 26 weeks weighing only 2lbs 3ozs and spent a little over 3 months in the NICU at CHKD. He had an Intraventricular hemorrhage (brain bleed) on both sides. He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was 12 months old. He is currently followed by 6 doctors and has 3 therapists. So far he has had to have 7 surgeries but we are crossing our fingers that there are no more anytime soon. He has delays with gross and fine motor skills but with the help of his therapists he is making great progress. He probably won’t walk until he is about 3 or 4 but there is a lot of equipment out there to help him until that day comes. We are working very hard with trying to get him to crawl but his left arm is stiff because of the Cerebral Palsy so his physical therapist and I believe he probably won’t crawl and will just start walking but we are definitely going to keep trying. Chase is a very happy child and my husband and I are very lucky to have the support of our wonderful family and friends.

The biggest struggle we have is when it comes to equipment that Chase needs because of his Cerebral Palsy. For some reason our insurance company feels that a lot of the equipment is experimental and they will not cover it which means we have to come out of pocket in order to get them for him. Some of the pieces of equipment are very expensive. For example the stander he needed for weight bearing in order for his bones to grow and form correctly was almost $1000 and we had to pay out of pocket because insurance would not cover it.

The last thing that is starting to become very scary is that Anthem, our insurance company, is not in agreement with The Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters (CHKD) in the amount they should have to reimburse the hospital, which means as of June 1st, 2011 all of the doctors at CHKD will be considered out of network and since 5 of his doctors are through CHKD we are very nervous about how this is going to affect us. From what I understand an appointment the usually only cost us a co-payment will now cost us about $200-$300+. When he has to follow up with all 5 doctors every 4-6 months that is going to get expensive and all of his doctors are pediatric specialist like a Neurosurgeon and Orthopedic so it’s not like we can just find a new doctor in the phone book. I hope Anthem and CHKD can work something out but by the looks of it it’s not going to happen.
