Surgery for Simon: Scheduled for Thursday, September 20

Simon is a Schnauzer mix who used to love to chaise birds and squirrels in our back yard until a few months ago. He has diabetes and receives insulin shots daily. Unfortunately the diabetes produced cataracts in both eyes. He no longer runs and is afraid of the steps...but the trooper he is ... he goes outside stepping slowly down the steps and walks the fence perimiter as usual even though he doesn't see the birds and squirrels or me! The Ophthalmology Service with NC State Univ estimates $2,600 for both eyes. It breaks my heart to see him wander around the house bumping into things. He sleeps with a 'speedo' (diaper) and looks forward to wearing it because he doesn't like accidents. He is just that smart and caring.

Bailey (Yorkie) his best friend, other than me, doesn't understand why he will not race with him anymore. When Simon has his surgery he will be back to his old self and race with the best...and win as usual.

UPDATE: Thursday will tell the tell. He will be at the animal hospital all day and return Friday for a check-up. Dogs usually stay overnight but with diabetes it is better he go home to eat. Simon is going to Animal Eye Care in Cary instead of NCSU per the vets recommendation. PS They are good and charge about $600 less although follow-ups are not included..
2nd UPDATE: Simon is doing great. He is taking his eyedrops without hesitation and looks at everything again. He enjoys the outdoors and his car rides to the Dr. in Cary.
