The family and friends of Shane Nowak are uniting to raise money for Shane's son William's college fund. Please show your support!

October 13, 2011

Six months ago today, on April 13th, 2011, I lost my sweet brother Shane to suicide....

For longer than most knew, he was bravely, but quietly, battling a disease. A disease that gets a lot less press or acceptance than others. A disease with such a negative stigma no one really wants to talk about it.

Shane suffered, for years, with anxiety & depression and was ultimately diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. People cursed with this affliction have little to no control over it, and ultimately its emotional ups and downs can be too much to take.

They live in a world which the majority of us could never comprehend. They are too ashamed to ask for help as often they are not accepted as having a "disease". They aren't nurtured and supported like those with other diseases.

I urge all of you, should you ever be in a situation where someone you know is struggling with a similar ailment, be vigilant in seeing that they are properly assessed by a doctor.

I've discovered over the past 6 months that one of the hardest things about losing someone so suddenly is both the person lost, as well as those left behind, don't get an opportunity to tie up loose ends. Neither get that one last hug, handshake, or "I love you". So you're left asking yourself and others... “What can we do?"

Well, if you really want to do something, please do this!

First, remember Shane for his smile, intelligence, quick humor and sarcastic wit. Remember him for his love of the outdoors and animals of all kinds.

Most importantly though, please remember Shane as a doting father who was overly proud of his son William (as if a parent could EVER be “overly proud”, but you know what I mean).

Speaking of William, this brings me to the last thing you can do in remembrance of Shane.

Shane was a firm believer in education, and over the years had basically become a "student for life". I know he wanted William to have the same opportunities he had when it came to the pursuit of knowledge. So far, through the love and generosity of my many friends and family members, over $5,000 has been raised in Shane's memory for William's College Fund and I will be forever grateful for your thoughtfulness and generosity.

That said, in order to build this fund to a level which William will never have to worry about whether he will be able to attend college, I still need your help!

That is the purpose of this page. So please, if you can help support this effort in even the smallest way, do! If you already have then I can't possibly begin to thank you enough.

No words can convey the deep gratitude my family and I have towards each of you. Thank you SO much for continuing to support us with your encouraging words and prayers. PLEASE... keep them coming!

Finally, I'd like to share a quick verse that has given me an enormous amount of strength and acceptance the last six months, and I'm sure will continue to do so for some time to come. I hope you find it as helpful as I have.

Thank You,

Brenden

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Only then will you experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7
