Liver Transplant Medical Expense Fund

Imagine everything you have been working for, all your life, and all your possessions and health were taken away in a short period of time (seems like a blink of an eye). Could you survive such an event? This is what I have been going through.

One evening I was rushed to the emergency room and later diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. I began treatment and then placed on the transplant list at Ochsner in 2009. During the past years I have had many tests, procedures and medications adding to the mounting and continued medical expenses.

The liver is responsible for many vital life functions. The primary functions of the liver are:

Bile production and excretion;
Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and
drugs;
Metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates;
Enzyme activation;
Storage of glycogen, vitamins, and minerals;
Synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin, and
clotting factors ; and
Blood detoxification and purification.

Due to these important activities, the liver is exposed to a number of insults and is one of the body's organs most subject to injury.

Periodically I have various tests, such as an abdominal ultrasound, EGD, and CT scan to check liver, veins, arteries, etc.

Medical expenses will only increase due to the current procedures and after transplant the addition of anti-rejection (immunosuppressive) drugs to prevent the body from rejecting the transplanted liver. These medications are expensive and will have to be taken daily for the rest of my life. How do you begin to comprehend the enormity and life altering impact of this?

I don’t know what the total expenses will be for the transplant and continued medications and procedures, therefore this is an attempt to alleviate the stress associated with financial matters associated with it so I can focus my energy and strength on winning this long and stressful battle.

Money donated will be used to pay for medical expenses and to help with daily living expenses while living on a small disability check. Please keep me in your prayers during this trial.
