Hello my name is Sylvie Curci.

I recently graduated from Emory University with a Bachelors of Science in Anthropology and Human Biology and a Minor in Global Health. I am currently studying for the GRE and applying to Public Health Schools. My dream is to one-day work for The American Red Cross.

I am currently working at Jewish Healthcare International, a nonprofit based out of Atlanta, Ga, that works to enhance worldwide healthcare by engaging professionals from the Diaspora and Israel who volunteer their time and expertise to JHI international missions. JHI is able to engage hundreds of healthcare professionals commited to the Jewish values of Mitzvot, Tzedakah and Tikun Olam, who educate thousands of healthcare providers worldwide; providing improved healthcare to hundreds of thousands of people.

I have been a returning volunteer to The Hospital Albert Schweitzer Haiti for the past three years. Having witnessed the difficulties of the healthcare situation in Haiti both before and after the earthquake, I have developed a passion for the people of Haiti and a desire to continue to help as much as possible.

I have had the honor of being asked by the staff at The Hospital Albert Schweitzer Haiti to return in the coming weeks to assist on a Cholera research project. Cholera is an infection of the small intestine that often causes severe dehydration, which in turn can lead to death. With the imminent threat of cholera this time of year, the hospital wishes to prepare as best they can by doing thorough analysis of their extensive database of past cholera patients, uncovering the geographically path of the disease, in order to turn there focus for treatment to these specific hot-spots in the coming months. This project will be in conjunction with other organizations working in the area such as the Haitian Ministry of Health, Zanmi Lasante, Partners in Health (Paul Farmer’s organization), and numerous others.

In order for me to assist The Hospital Albert Schweitzer with this project, I need to pay my own way from Atlanta, Georgia to Deschapelles, Haiti. Despite the trip taking a total of only about 6 hours of traveling time, the cost is much greater. With airfare, transportation from the airport located in Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince to Deschapelle, accommodations and supplies, the total cost is approximately $2,000.00.
