For those not familiar with our story, I refer to Richard's caring bridge site.

We are a hard working family and the idea of holding out our hands for help is difficult. But, to be honest, we have accumulated thousands of dollars of medical debt. With at least one addtional major surgery in Florida, we have many thousands of dollars of treatment left to be done. Even with Rich back to work and my working three jobs, we cannot get ahead of the medical bills. Our personal savings are gone, and we have sold all we can to help pay for the treatments. We are tapped out.

Rich was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his jaw last November. The cancer was a result of radiation treatment he received for head and neck cancer back in 2005. The only option for treatment that gave us hope for a good outcome was with Dr. Marx at the University of Miami. It involved surgical removal of most of his lower jaw, followed by aggressive chemotherapy treatments here in Rockford. A second surgery to implant new bone was done this past September. He is doing very well, but his treatment has thus far required two 12+ hour surgeries, multiple trips to Florida, multiple in hospital chemotherapy treatments, the list goes on and on. Worst of all, we are continually fighting with the insurance companies to get payment for his treatments. Rich's insurance company is paying 70% of the bills for Dr. Marx but with the strange structure of current insurance coveage we still owe over $8000 to the doctors here and in Florida and Rich has at least one more major surgery and a lot of dental procedures remaining.
Our friends and family have stepped in with financial help, travel vouchers to help cover the flights to Florida, care for Sam while we are away and too many gifts to name. For this we are eternally grateful.

We have several friends who are also battling this horrible disease and I hesitated to ask for help since they seemed to be going through so much worse a journey. But, I have decided to let go of my foolish pride and admit that we need help. Any amount is appreciated and, if a monetary gift is not possible, we would ask for your thoughts and prayers. God bless you!
