This is the Melodie Howard assistance fund to help overcome all the costs of cancer.

Friends and Family,

If you're here, you probably know that Melodie was diagnosed with colon cancer last June, and has been struggling through months of chemotherapy and neuropathy. Some of you may not know that on May first, Melodie and her daughter Jessica traveled to Chicago to one of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America after Melodie had been told that one of her lymph nodes had become severely affected and she had only months to live.

Since her arrival, the incredibly skilled staff at CTCA removed the metastatic lymph node and set her on the fast track to recovery. Tragedy struck, though, when Melodie's lungs began to fill up with mucus and fibrosis, limiting her ability to absorb oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. The doctors told Jessica that Melodie had to be put on a ventilator, and things began to go downhill. At this point, Melodie's son, Alex, was called up to Chicago to see his mother for what may have been the last time. Days slowly turned into weeks as brother and sister helped their mother recover and move off the ventilator. They coached her through breathing exercises and helped her bolster the strength to sit up, eat, and talk. This battle has not only sapped the energy of the family, but has also exacerbated many Melodie's financial issues. With no income and mounting mortgage and hospital bills, Melodie can only sit in her bed and hope to recover, to go back to her job, and to keep her home.

I understand that in this economy, many simply cannot afford to make any donations when they themselves are fighting to remain afloat. I simply ask that anyone who could, to spare a dollar or two to help Melodie pay off these bills, be them hospital or mortgage or even for groceries. Any support is greatly appreciated. This website allows for both anonymous and public donation, so it's completely up to you if you want to add your name on any donation.

On behalf of my mother, my sister, and myself, I simply cannot thank you enough for your support in this endeavor. It means so much to me that you would help us fight this horrible affliction, or to share this story with your own friends so they might help as well. Thank you again.

I would like to take this moment to thank LeAnn, our family friend, for traveling 300 miles up to Chicago to be with us and support us for a weekend. Thank you so much!

Alex Howard and Family

P.S. This has finally gotten my mother to quit smoking!
